The Buddha-nature is also like that. Son of good family, since space does not exist, it does not belong to the three times. The Buddha-nature is also constant, so it does not belong to the three times. Son of good family, since the Thus-gone One has attained the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, the Buddha-nature and all the Buddha's teachings are constant, unchanging, and unmoving. Therefore, like space, it does not have the three times. Son of good family, since space does not exist, it is not internal, nor is it external. The Buddha-nature is also constant, so it is not internal, nor is it external. Therefore, the Buddha-nature is the same as space, it is said. Son of good family, just as in the world, the unobstructed place is called space, so too, the Thus-gone One, having attained the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, because there is no obstruction to all the Buddha's teachings, it is said that the Buddha-nature is the same as space. Because of that cause, that condition, I have said that the Buddha-nature is like space. Furthermore, the Bodhisattva Light Protector asked the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, the Buddha-nature and Nirvana do not belong to the three times, but if we say they exist, then space also does not belong to the three times, so why do we not say it exists? The Blessed One replied: Son of good family, because it is not Nirvana, it is called Nirvana. Because it is not the Thus-gone One, it is called the Thus-gone One. Because it is not the Buddha-nature, it is called the Buddha-nature. How is it not Nirvana? It is like this: all afflictions and all conditioned phenomena are, because those conditioned afflictions are destroyed, it is called Nirvana. That which is not the Thus-gone One is like this: from the holders of wrong views to the solitary Buddhas, because what is between the holders of wrong views and the solitary Buddhas is destroyed, it is called the Thus-gone One. That which is not the Buddha-nature is like this: walls, houses, tiles, bricks, and objects without consciousness.

All of that, like that, abandoning those things without discriminating consciousness is called Buddha-nature. Son of good family, in all the world, without space, it cannot become a companion of space. Bodhisattva Light Protector asked: World Honored One, in the world, without the four great elements, it cannot become a companion of the four great elements, but it can be said that there are four great elements, space also has no companion, why can't it be said that there is? The World Honored One said: Son of good family, Nirvana does not belong to the three times, so saying that space is also the same as it is not like that. Why is that? Nirvana exists, it can be seen, it can be realized, it is the trace of form, it is the word of speech, it is the nature of existence, it is the object of focus, it is the place of refuge, it is the light of peace, it is the fruit of happiness, therefore it does not belong to the three times. The nature of space does not have this, therefore it is called non-existence. Apart from these, if there is another dharma on the other shore, then it will belong to the three times. If space is also the same as the existing dharma, it cannot be said that it does not belong to the three times. Son of good family, just as worldly people say, space is formless, without antidote, and invisible. If it is formless, without antidote, and invisible, it will become a mind-born dharma. If space is consistent with mind-born dharma, it cannot be said that it does not belong to the three times. If it belongs to the three times in this way, it will become the four aggregates, therefore, apart from the four aggregates, there is nothing called space. Furthermore, son of good family, the non-Buddhists say this, space is appearance. If it is appearance, it will become a dharma of form, if space is a dharma of form, it will become impermanent. If it belongs to the three times because of impermanence in this way, why do the non-Buddhists say that it does not belong to the three times? If it belongs to the three times, it is not space, because space is permanent.
