Since one cultivates the undefiled path and attains the fruit of non-return, why is it not called stream-entry? The Blessed One declared: Son of good family, the attainment of the first fruit is called stream-entry. Just as you asked earlier, if a non-Buddhist first cuts off afflictions and reaches the realm of nothingness, and then cultivates the undefiled path and attains the fruit of non-return, why is it not called stream-entry? Son of good family, in this way, the attainment of the first fruit is called stream-entry, because at that time he possesses eight kinds of wisdom and sixteen aspects of conduct. The venerable Mahākāśyapa asked: Blessed One, if the attainment of non-return is also like that, possessing eight kinds of wisdom and sixteen aspects of conduct, why is it not called stream-entry? Son of good family, the sixteen aspects of conduct with defilements are of two kinds: mixed and unmixed. The sixteen aspects of conduct without defilements are also of two kinds: approaching the fruit and attaining the fruit. The eight kinds of wisdom are also of two kinds: approaching the fruit and attaining the fruit. The stream-enterer abandons the sixteen aspects of mixed conduct and attains the sixteen aspects of unmixed conduct, abandons the eight kinds of wisdom approaching the fruit, and attains the eight fruits of wisdom. The non-returner is not like that, therefore the attainment of the first fruit is called stream-entry. Son of good family, the stream-enterer focuses on the four noble truths. The once-returner focuses only on one truth, therefore the attainment of the first fruit is called stream-entry. For that reason, that cause, it is proclaimed like the osprey. The so-called going while looking around in all directions refers to the once-returner. Diligently striving on the path with one-pointedness is for the sake of cutting off desire, hatred, ignorance, and pride, just as the osprey looks around in all directions to go for food. Abiding from going is like the non-returner abiding after obtaining food. And the non-returner, in summary, is also of two kinds: having attained the fruit of non-return in the present time, and being even more diligent.

Therefore, by diligent practice, one attains the fruit of an Arhat, and because of attachment to the peaceful Samadhi of the Form Realm and the Formless Realm, one does not take rebirth in the Desire Realm, hence called a Non-Returner. Furthermore, there are five types of Non-Returners: Intermediate Nirvana, Rebirth Nirvana, Effort Nirvana, Effortless Nirvana, and Upward Stream Nirvana. There are also six types, namely Present Nirvana, and the other five are the same as before. There are also seven types, namely Nirvana in the Formless Realm, and the other six are the same as before. Effort Nirvana has two types: Two-Life and Four-Life. Among them, the Two-Life one has sharp faculties, and the Four-Life one has dull faculties. There are also two types: those who are diligent but lack mastery of Samadhi, and those who are lazy but have mastery of Samadhi. There are also two types: those who possess diligent Samadhi, and those who possess neither. Son of lineage, sentient beings of the Desire Realm and the Form Realm have two types of karma: the karma of action and the karma of rebirth. Intermediate Nirvana only has the karma of action, and not the karma of rebirth. Therefore, it is called Intermediate Nirvana, that is, abandoning the aggregates of the Desire Realm, and because of sharp faculties, attaining Nirvana without going to the Form Realm, this is Intermediate Nirvana. Non-Returners have four types of intentions: Neither Learner nor Non-Learner, Learner, Non-Learner, and Nirvana as Neither Learner nor Non-Learner. Furthermore, how is it Intermediate Nirvana? Son of lineage, among the four minds of Non-Returners, two have attained Nirvana, and two have not attained Nirvana, therefore it is called Intermediate Nirvana. Taking aggregates and attaining Nirvana also has two types: the karma of action and the karma of rebirth. They abandon the aggregates of the Desire Realm and take the aggregates of the Form Realm.

Then, by diligently striving on the path, one attains nirvana by exhausting one's lifespan. Bodhisattva Light Protector inquired: "World Honored One, if exhausting one's lifespan is called nirvana, why do you say one attains nirvana by taking up aggregates?" The World Honored One said: "Son of good family, by taking up aggregates, one cuts off the afflictions of the three realms. Therefore, it is said that one attains nirvana by taking up aggregates. Son of good family, complete nirvana through practice means constantly striving on the path. By the power of conditioned samadhi, one completely cuts off afflictions and is called nirvana through the practice of nirvana. Complete nirvana through immeasurable practice means knowing that one will definitely attain nirvana, and therefore being lazy. One also attains nirvana by exhausting one's lifespan through the power of conditioned samadhi. Therefore, it is said that one attains complete nirvana through non-practice. Complete nirvana through extreme constancy refers to someone who, having attained the fourth dhyana, generates a mind of joy in the first dhyana, and due to that cause, is reborn in the first dhyana. There are two kinds of constancy: the constancy of afflictions and the constancy of the path. One exhausts one's lifespan through the constancy of the path, generates a mind of joy in the second dhyana, and is reborn in the second dhyana due to the condition of joy. Similarly, it is the same up to the fourth dhyana. That fourth dhyana also has two types: going to the formless realm and going to the five Pure Abodes. Thus, of those two, one delights in samadhi, and one delights in wisdom. Among them, those who delight in wisdom go to the five Pure Abodes. Those who delight in samadhi go to the formless realm. Thus, of those two, one meditates on five kinds of distinctions in the fourth dhyana, and one does not meditate. What are the five? They are inferior, intermediate, superior, superior-intermediate, and superior-superior. Among them, those who meditate on the superior-superior abide in the Akanistha heaven. Those who meditate on the superior-intermediate abide in the Sudarsana heaven. Those who meditate on the superior abide in the Sudrsti heaven.
