and flowing upwards. Because of flowing upwards in that way, it is called "Stream-enterer." Bodhisattva Light Protector asked: "World Honored One, if the reason is like that, then why aren't those who are Once-returners, Non-returners, and Arhats also called 'Stream-enterers'?" The Buddha replied: "Son of good family, from Stream-enterer to Buddha, it is also called 'Stream-enterer.' If there were no Stream-enterer from Once-returner to Buddha, how could one establish anything from Once-returner to Buddha? All sentient beings have two names: the old name and the newly established name. In the time of a foolish child, there is a worldly name. Having attained the path, one is named anew and called 'Stream-enterer.' Because of having attained it previously, it is called 'Stream-enterer.' Because of attaining it later, it is called 'Once-returner.' That itself is also called 'Stream-enterer,' and also called 'Once-returner,' up to being called 'Buddha.' Son of good family, there are two kinds of Stream-enterers: liberation and nirvana. Because all noble ones have those two kinds, from Stream-enterer and Once-returner up to Buddha, it is the same as that. Son of good family, a Bodhisattva is also called a Stream-enterer. Why is that? A Bodhisattva is the wisdom of exhaustion and the wisdom of non-arising, and a Stream-enterer also seeks those two kinds of wisdom, therefore a Stream-enterer can also be established as a Bodhisattva. A Stream-enterer can also be called a Buddha. Why is that? Because of truly seeing the path and completely cutting off afflictions, and truly becoming the complete cause and effect, and truly the complete path being mixed, unmixed, and harmonious. From Once-returner to Arhat, it is also the same as that. Son of good family, there are two meanings of Stream-enterer: sharp faculties and dull faculties. Among them, one with dull faculties goes up and down between gods and humans seven times. There are also five kinds of dull faculties; some go upwards

Six, five, four, three, and two. Those with sharp faculties will attain from the fruit of entering the stream up to the state of an Arhat in this very life. Son of good family, why do you take the example of a fish called "small fish" for entering the stream? Son of good family, it is because that fish has four qualities. What are they? Because its bones are thin, it is light; because it has fins, it is light; it likes to see the light of appearance; and it holds firmly. The one who has entered the stream also has four qualities. Among them, having thin bones is an example of having a small portion of afflictions. Having fins is an example of higher vision and calm abiding. Liking to see the light of appearance is an example of seeing the path. Holding firmly means that after hearing the Tathagata explain impermanence, suffering, selflessness, and impurity, one holds firmly and does not abandon them. For example, when the king of demons transformed into the likeness of the Buddha, a householder named Dragshul saw it and was frightened. Seeing that the householder's mind was disturbed, the demon said to the householder, "The four truths I previously taught were not accurate. Now I will show you five truths, six aggregates, thirteen sense bases, and nineteen realms." When the householder heard this, he examined all the characteristics of the Dharma and found that they were meaningless. Therefore, his mind did not waver and he held on firmly. The Great Nirvana Sutra. Chapter 48. Bodhisattva Light Protector asked the Blessed One, "Blessed One, is the one who has entered the stream called 'one who has entered the stream' because they have previously attained the path? Or are they called 'one who has entered the stream' because they have attained the first fruit? If they are called 'one who has entered the stream' because they have previously attained the path, then why, when they attain the Dharma of forbearance towards suffering, are they not called 'one who has entered the stream' but are called 'one who follows the Dharma'? If they are called 'one who has entered the stream' because they have attained the first fruit, then the non-Buddhists previously cut off afflictions and went to the realm of nothingness."
