and the path. Thus, because the distinctions of the four truths are not discerned, the conduct of the noble ones is not understood. Because the conduct of the noble ones is not understood, the Thus-Gone One is not understood. Because the Thus-Gone One is not understood, the liberation of the Thus-Gone One is not understood. Because liberation is not understood, nirvana is not understood. Therefore, this is called not possessing wisdom. Ordinary individuals do not possess the five higher things because of two reasons: generating virtuous dharmas and generating non-virtuous dharmas. How then does one generate non-virtuous dharmas? That person, not seeing that they do not possess a self, generates a mind of clinging, thinking that they possess a self. Among those with similar training, they think, "I am the best." Therefore, they rely on non-virtuous friends who are similar to themselves. By relying in this way, they will also hear dharmas that they do not possess. Having heard them, their mind will be pleased and attached, generating pride and arrogance, and they will do many things without mindfulness. Due to the cause of carelessness, they associate with householders and are fond of speaking and hearing about the activities of householders. They will abandon the completely pure Dharma of the ordained. Due to this cause and condition, they will generate non-virtuous dharmas. Because of generating non-virtuous dharmas, they will generate impure actions through the doors of body, speech, and mind. Because the three actions are completely impure, they will generate the realms of hell beings, animals, and hungry ghosts. This is called arising for a moment and then disappearing. What kind of people belong to this Dharma of arising for a moment and then disappearing? For example, Devadatta, the monk Kokālika, the monk Ānanda, the monk Good Star, the monk Tiṣya, the monk Star King, the nun Loving Mother Earth, the nun Solitary Mother, the nun Direction Mother, the nun Proud Mother, the householder Raba Tsang, the lay follower Seeking Existence, the Shakya Shali, the householder Woolly Bull, the laywoman Nameless, the laywoman Light, the laywoman Joyful Woman, the laywoman Sangha, the laywoman Bell, and so on, these are those who arise for a moment.
