I, cannot recite, nor can I show it to others, cannot do beneficial things, this is called not possessing hearing. Even those who hold the six divisions of the sutras, whether for the sake of argument, or to overcome others, or for the sake of gain and fame, or for the sake of all existences, hold, read, recite, or explain, this is called not possessing hearing. Son of lineage, I have explained hearing from the sutras and possessing hearing, what is possessing hearing? If a certain bhikshu is virtuous in body, speech, and mind, he should first make offerings to the khenpos and acharyas, and to those with qualities. Having made offerings in this way, those acharyas will generate a mind of loving-kindness towards that bhikshu, and by this cause, they will teach the sutras and the Dharma. That bhikshu should also hold, recite, and practice with one-pointed mind. By holding, reciting, and practicing, wisdom will be attained. Having attained wisdom in this way, he will be very mindful and abide according to the Dharma. Having abided with great mindfulness, he will attain the true meaning. Having attained the true meaning, body and mind will become secluded. Having become secluded in body and mind, a joyful mind will arise. Thus, due to the joy in the mind, the mind of samadhi will be attained. In order to attain the mind of samadhi, correct knowledge and vision will be attained. Having attained correct knowledge and vision, a mind of weariness will arise towards all existences. Because of weariness towards all existences, liberation will be attained, and whoever does not have such things is called not possessing hearing. Whoever does not possess those three things will also not possess giving. There are two kinds of giving, namely material giving and Dharma giving. He may do material giving, but seeks existence. He may do Dharma giving, but will not possess it either, why is that? Because he fears that he will surpass the donor, he hides and does not show everything, this is called not possessing giving. Both material and Dharma giving have two kinds, namely noble and non-noble. The noble one is one who, having given, the fruit ripens

does not give. A non-noble person expects the ripening of fruits after making offerings. A noble person makes Dharma offerings in order to increase the Dharma. A non-noble person makes Dharma offerings in order to increase worldly affairs. Thus, making material offerings to increase wealth and making Dharma offerings to increase worldly affairs are called not possessing generosity. Furthermore, that person upholds the six sections of the sutras, giving necessities to those who uphold the Dharma, and not giving necessities to those who do not uphold the Dharma, therefore it is called not possessing generosity. In this way, if that person does not possess the above four things, then he will also not possess diligence in wisdom. The characteristic of wisdom is self-discrimination. That person cannot distinguish whether the Tathagata is permanent or impermanent. In the sutra of the complete Nirvana of the Tathagata, it is said: The Tathagata is liberation, liberation is the Tathagata, the Tathagata is Nirvana, Nirvana is liberation. Not being able to distinguish the differences in those meanings, and not being able to realize that pure conduct is the Tathagata, the Tathagata is loving-kindness, compassion, equanimity, and joy, loving-kindness, compassion, equanimity, and joy are liberation, liberation is complete Nirvana, complete Nirvana is the four immeasurables. Not being able to distinguish the differences in those meanings is called not possessing wisdom. Furthermore, what cannot be distinguished is that the nature of the Buddha is the Tathagata, the Tathagata is all the unshared Dharmas, the unshared Dharmas are liberation, liberation is complete Nirvana, complete Nirvana is the unshared Dharmas. Not being able to distinguish the differences in those meanings is called not possessing wisdom. Furthermore, what cannot be distinguished are the four noble truths, namely suffering, origin, cessation.
