Generating faith after hearing this sutra is called "arising." What are the causes and conditions for it to be called "arising"? It is called "arising" when one abandons all non-virtuous dharmas and cultivates virtuous dharmas after hearing this sutra. Although there is faith, it is not called "possessed." What are the causes and conditions for it to be called not possessing faith? Because that person believes that the great Nirvana of complete cessation is permanent, blissful, self, and pure, but says that the body of the Tathagata is impermanent, without bliss, without self, and without purity. The Nirvana of the Tathagata is of two types: conditioned and unconditioned. Conditioned Nirvana lacks permanence, bliss, self, and purity. Unconditioned Nirvana possesses permanence, bliss, self, and purity. Although one believes that sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature, one does not believe that all beings possess it, therefore it is not called possessing faith. Son of good family, faith is of two types: faith and seeking. Although that person has faith, he cannot seek and strive, therefore it is not called not possessing faith. Again, there are two types: arising from hearing and arising from contemplation. His faith arises from hearing, but not from contemplation, therefore it is called not possessing faith. Again, there are two types: believing in the existence of enlightenment and believing in the existence of attainment. His mind of faith believes in the existence of enlightenment, but does not believe in the existence of attainment, this is called not possessing faith. Again, there are two types: believing in the correct and believing in the incorrect. If one says that cause and effect exist, and that the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha also exist, this is believing in the correct. If one says that cause and effect do not exist, and that the nature of the Three Jewels is also different, believing in wrong views such as those of Kashyapa Buddha and Purana Kashyapa, this is called believing in the incorrect. Although that person believes in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, he does not believe that the nature of the Three Jewels is the same, and although he believes that cause and effect exist,

Not believing in being able to obtain is called not having faith. Whoever does not have faith is also not endowed with having taken vows. What cause, what reason is called not being endowed? Because of not being endowed with the cause, one is not endowed with vows. Again, why is it called not being endowed? There are two types of vows: the vows of ritual and the vows of vows. Whoever is only endowed with the vows of ritual, but not endowed with the vows of vows, is called not being endowed with vows. Again, there are two types: the vows of doing and the vows of not doing. Whoever is only endowed with the vows of doing, but not endowed with the vows of not doing, is called not being endowed with vows. Again, there are two types: obtaining a correct livelihood through body and speech, and not obtaining a correct livelihood through body and speech. Whoever does not obtain a correct livelihood through body and speech is called not being endowed with vows. Again, there are two types: the vows of seeking and the vows of giving. Whoever is only endowed with the vows of seeking existence, but not endowed with the vows of giving, is called not being endowed with vows. Again, there are two types: the vows focused on existence and the vows focused on enlightenment. Whoever is only endowed with the vows focused on existence, but not endowed with the vows focused on enlightenment, is called not being endowed with vows. There are also two types of vows: virtuous vows and non-virtuous vows. Among them, virtuous body, speech, and mind are virtuous vows. The asceticism of cows and the asceticism of dogs are non-virtuous vows. Whoever believes that those two vows have virtuous results is called not being endowed with vows. In this way, not being endowed with these two things, faith and vows, one will also not be diligent in much learning. So, how is it not being endowed with hearing? Whoever believes in six of the twelve categories of scriptures spoken by the Tathagata, but does not believe in six categories, is called not being endowed with hearing. In this way, even if one holds six categories of scriptures, one also recites
