Possessing immeasurable and countless samadhis, as well as immeasurable and countless samadhis such as the five wisdoms, this is called existence. What is non-existent is as follows: the past virtues of the Tathagata, as well as non-virtue, as well as the unspeakable, as well as karma, as well as cause, as well as effect, as well as maturation, as well as afflictions, as well as the five aggregates, as well as the twelve links of dependent origination, this is called non-existence. Son of good family, just as existence and non-existence are alike, so are virtue and non-virtue, as well as defiled and undefiled, as well as mundane and supramundane, as well as noble and ignoble, as well as conditioned and unconditioned, as well as correct and incorrect, as well as peaceful and unpeaceful, as well as contentious and non-contentious, as well as realms and non-realms, as well as afflictions and non-afflictions, as well as grasping and non-grasping, as well as expressible and inexpressible, as well as existence and non-existence, as well as the three times and non-three times, as well as time and non-time, as well as permanent and impermanent, as well as self and non-self, as well as happiness and unhappiness, as well as pure and impure, as well as form, as well as feeling, as well as perception, as well as formation, as well as consciousness, as well as form, as well as feeling, as well as perception, as well as formation, as well as non-consciousness, as well as internal sense bases and non-internal sense bases, as well as external sense bases and non-external sense bases, as well as the twelve links of dependent origination and non-twelve links of dependent origination, this is called the Buddha-nature of the Tathagata, existence and non-existence. It is the same as the existence and non-existence of the Buddha-nature of those with wrong views. Son of good family, although I have said that all sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature, sentient beings do not understand that these are the words spoken by the Tathagata in accordance with my own mind. Son of good family, even a Bodhisattva who is bound by one lifetime cannot understand these words, let alone the Two Vehicles and other Bodhisattvas. Son of good family, in the past, I once resided on Vulture Peak Mountain, and the Bodhisattva

O Maitreya, if the conventional truth is spoken, can Shariputra and the five hundred Shravakas understand those things? If they cannot understand, what need is there to mention the ultimate truth that transcends the world? Son of lineage, some Buddha-nature exists in those with wrong views but not in those with roots of virtue. Some Buddha-nature exists in those with roots of virtue but not in those with wrong views. Some Buddha-nature exists in both. Some Buddha-nature exists in neither. Son of lineage, among my attendants, whoever understands the meaning of these four statements should not ask whether those with wrong views necessarily have Buddha-nature or necessarily do not have Buddha-nature. The statement that all sentient beings have Buddha-nature is said to be the words spoken by the Tathagata in conjunction with his own intention. Since the Tathagata also speaks in conjunction with his own intention, why do sentient beings view it one-sidedly? Son of lineage, for example, the seven kinds of sentient beings in the Ganges River are those who are always submerged, those who appear for a moment and then submerge again, those who appear and then abide, those who appear and look in all four directions, those who look around and then leave, those who leave and then stay, and those who go both in water and on land. Among them, 'always submerged' refers to the great fish whose body is heavy because of the ripening of great non-virtuous deeds, and it stays at the bottom of the water, therefore it is always submerged. 'Appearing for a moment and then submerging again' refers to the great fish whose body is heavy because of the ripening of non-virtuous deeds, and it stays in a shallow place, and it is able to see the light of appearance for a moment. Because of the cause of appearance, it appears for a moment, but because its body is heavy, it submerges again. 'Appearing and then abiding' refers to the fish called 'Dibhi,' which stays in shallow water and is happy to see the light of appearance. 'Appearing and looking in all directions' refers to the fish called 'Tsaggu,' which looks in all four directions in order to find food. 'Looking and then leaving' refers to the fish called 'Tsaggu,' which, no matter what it sees from afar, thinks it is food and quickly goes, this is called looking and then leaving. 'Leaving and then staying' refers to the fish that, after arriving there, stays if it finds something edible, this is called leaving and then staying.
