That is not permissible. Son of good family, if one abandons skillful means, milk turns into yogurt, and it is impossible for yogurt to turn into butter. Seeing that such a thing is impossible, one needs skillful means. Son of good family, those who are skilled in means do not look at the opposite of abandoning means, milk turning into yogurt; Until butter, they do not look at the opposite of abandoning means turning into butter. Son of good family, therefore I said, from this sutra, because the cause arises, the dharma exists; because the cause ceases, the dharma does not exist. Son of good family, for example, the characteristic of salt is that it makes everything that is not salty become salty. If all things that are not salty originally had the nature of salt, why do worldly people still seek salt? If it did not exist from the beginning, if it did not exist from the beginning but now exists, then is it because of other conditions that it becomes salty? Or someone might say this, all things that are not salty have the nature of salt, but because the amount is small, it is not known, because there is a small amount of nature, therefore salt makes salt salty. If there is no nature from the beginning, even if there is salt, it will not become salty. For example, the seed itself has the four great elements, because of the conditions of the external four great elements, sprouts, stems, branches, and leaves are produced, and the nature of salt is also the same, if you say so, that is also not permissible. Why is that? If something that is not salty originally has the nature of salt, then salt should also have a component that is not salty. If salt originally has two natures, why not use salt that is not salty when it is needed? Therefore, one should know that salt originally does not have two natures, just like salt, all things that are not salty are also the same. If it is said that the internal four great elements are produced by the power of the external four great elements, that is also not permissible. Why is that? Because it is not skillful means, but is stated sequentially. Just as from milk turning into yogurt, until butter, all dharmas cannot be accomplished without skillful means, the four great elements are also the same. If so, if the internal four great elements are produced from the external four great elements, why the internal four great elements

It is not seen that the four great elements arise from the outside. For example, it is like the fruit of a tree called Shirisha. Although it is formless and without a core, when the star Pabasang is seen, a five-fingered fruit will grow. Thus, that fruit is not truly born from the four great elements outside. Son of lineage, just as I have spoken of the twelve scriptures, some are spoken in conjunction with my own mind, some are spoken in conjunction with the minds of others, and some are spoken in conjunction with the minds of myself and others. So, how is it spoken in conjunction with my own mind? It is like the five hundred monks asking Shariputra: Venerable one, what is the cause of the body as spoken by the Blessed One? Shariputra said: Venerable ones, since you have each attained liberation, why do you ask such a question? Some of the monks said this: Venerable one, when I had not attained liberation, I thought that ignorance was the cause of the body. By focusing my mind in this way, I attained the fruit of an Arhat. Some of the monks said this: Venerable one, when I had not attained liberation, I thought that craving and ignorance were the cause of the body. By focusing my mind in this way, I attained the fruit of an Arhat. Some of the monks thought this: actions, consciousness, name and form, the six sense sources, contact, feeling, craving, grasping, existence, birth, food, implements, and the five desires are the cause of the body. Then, the five hundred monks each spoke of their own understanding, and then went to where the Blessed One was, prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One, circumambulated three times to the right, and after prostrating, sat down on one side. Each of them reported to the Blessed One the meaning they had understood. Then, Shariputra reported to the Blessed One: Blessed One, among these monks, who is speaking correctly? Who is not speaking correctly? The Blessed One replied: Shariputra, well done, well done! There is not one of the monks who is not speaking correctly.
