Therefore, it is said that it can only be seen through methods. Therefore, in order to dispel the two extremes, the Tathagata said that Buddha-nature is neither inside nor outside, nor inside and outside. This is called the Middle Way. Son of good family, the Buddha-nature of sentient beings is neither existent nor non-existent. Why? Although Buddha-nature exists, it is not like space. Why? Because the empty space of the world is emptiness, and even if countless skillful means are used, it cannot be pointed to, but Buddha-nature can be pointed to. Therefore, although it exists, it is not the same as empty space. Although there is no Buddha-nature, it is not the same as a rabbit's horn. Why? Because turtle hair and rabbit horns cannot be produced even with countless methods, but Buddha-nature can be produced. Therefore, although it does not exist, it is not the same as a rabbit's horn. Therefore, Buddha-nature is neither existent nor non-existent, nor both existent and non-existent. How is it existent? Because all beings have it, it cannot be cut off or denied, just like the flame of a butter lamp, until one attains unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Therefore, it is called existent. How is it non-existent? Because all sentient beings do not currently possess all the qualities of a Buddha, such as permanence, bliss, self, and purity, so it is non-existent at this time, therefore it is called non-existent. The combination of existent and non-existent is called the Middle Way. Therefore, the Blessed One said that the Buddha-nature of sentient beings is neither existent nor non-existent. Son of good family, if someone asks: Is there a fruit in the seed? One can definitely say yes, and one can also answer no. Why? Because without the seed, the fruit will not be produced, so one can also say yes. Because the seed has not yet sprouted, it is said to be no. Therefore, one can say both yes and no. Why? Because the times are different.

The nature is one. Likewise, the Buddha-nature of sentient beings is also the same as that. If it is said that there is Buddha-nature other than sentient beings, then it is not right. Why is that? Sentient beings themselves are Buddha-nature, and Buddha-nature itself is sentient beings. It is only because of the difference in time that there is purity and impurity. Son of good family, if someone asks, "Can a seed produce a fruit? Can a fruit not produce?" then answer them like this: "It can produce and it cannot produce." Question: Blessed One, for example, what is the meaning of what worldly people say, "There is yogurt in milk"? The Buddha said: Son of good family, if someone says that there is yogurt in milk, it is attachment. Whoever says there is no yogurt is speaking falsely. Apart from these two, one can also say "there is" and one can also say "there is not," one should definitely say so. Why say "there is"? Because milk can produce yogurt. The cause is milk, the result is yogurt, therefore it is said "there is." How to say "there is not"? Because the shape and taste are different. Drinking and using are also not the same. Milk is given for hot diseases, yogurt is given for diarrhea. Milk causes cold diseases, yogurt causes hot diseases. Son of good family, if someone says that there is the nature of yogurt in milk, then milk itself is yogurt and yogurt itself is milk. If the nature becomes one, then why does milk come first and yogurt not come first? If there is a cause and condition, why have all worldly people not said it before? If there is no cause and condition, why did yogurt not come first? Since yogurt did not come first, who determined the order of milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, and the essence of butter? Therefore, it should be known that yogurt is without beginning and exists now. If it is without beginning and exists now, then it becomes an impermanent dharma. Son of good family, if someone says that because there is the nature of yogurt in milk, yogurt will be produced, but because water and grass do not have the nature of yogurt, yogurt will not be produced, that is also not so.

Why is that? Because water and grass also have the nature of milk and yogurt. Why is that? Because milk and yogurt come from water and grass. If someone says that milk certainly has the nature of yogurt, but water and grass do not, then that is a lie. Why is that? Because the mind is not equal, so it is called a lie. Son of good family, if someone says that milk certainly has yogurt, then yogurt should also be able to produce milk. Then, what cause and condition cause milk to become yogurt, but yogurt cannot become milk? If there is no cause and condition, then it should be known that yogurt has existed since the beginningless. Therefore, wise people will say that milk has the nature of yogurt, but it is neither existent nor non-existent. Son of good family, therefore, the Tathagata said in this sutra that all sentient beings certainly have the Tathagatagarbha (Buddha-nature). If you say that, it is attachment. If you say it does not exist, it is a lie. Therefore, wise and intelligent people should say that the Tathagatagarbha (Buddha-nature) is neither existent nor non-existent. Son of good family, the eye consciousness arises from the combination of four things. What are the four? Eye, form, light, and attention. The nature of eye consciousness is not eye, not form, not light, and not attention, but it arises from the combination. Thus, eye consciousness has existed since the beginningless. It will also disappear after existence, so it should be known that there is no such thing as initial nature. Similarly, the nature of yogurt in milk is also the same. If someone says that water does not have the nature of yogurt, so it will not produce yogurt, but milk must have the nature of yogurt, then that is also not acceptable. Why is that? Son of good family, all dharmas have different causes and different effects. It is not that all effects arise from one cause, nor that all effects arise from one cause. Son of good family, since eye consciousness arises from these four things, these four things can also produce ear consciousness.
