Happiness, and complete purity, and reality, and truth, and virtue: this is called answering with distinction. Son of the lineage, the Buddha-nature of a bodhisattva who is one lifetime away from Buddhahood has six aspects: permanence, and complete purity, and reality, and truth, and virtue, and slightly visible: this is called answering with distinction. As you asked before, does one who has severed the roots of virtue have Buddha-nature? He also has the Tathagata's Buddha-nature, and also the Buddha-nature of a bodhisattva who is one lifetime away from Buddhahood. Because these two Buddha-natures obscure the future, they are called non-existent. Because they will undoubtedly be attained in the end, they are called existent. This is called answering with distinction. The Tathagata's Buddha-nature is not past, not present, not future. The Buddha-nature of one lifetime away from Buddhahood is called present because it is slightly visible in the present and future. It is called future because it is not fully visible. From the time the Tathagata has not attained unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, Buddha-nature can also be called past, present, and future. However, the result is not like that; there are times when it is threefold, and there are times when it is not threefold. The cause of the Buddha-nature of a bodhisattva who is one lifetime away from Buddhahood is past, present, and future, and the result is the same as that: this is called answering with distinction. The Buddha-nature of a ninth-level bodhisattva has six aspects: permanence, and virtue, and reality, and truth, and complete purity, and visibility. Thus, the cause of Buddha-nature is past, present, and future, and the result is the same: this is called answering with distinction. The Buddha-nature of bodhisattvas from the eighth to the sixth levels has five aspects: reality, and truth, and complete purity, and virtue, and observability, and this is also

Because it becomes the cause of Buddha-nature, it is past, present, and future. The result is also the same. This is called answering separately. The Buddha-nature of Bodhisattvas from the fifth bhumi to the first bhumi has five aspects: correct, true, completely pure, worth seeing, virtuous, and non-virtuous. Son of the lineage, the fifth Buddha-nature, the sixth Buddha-nature, and the seventh Buddha-nature are said to exist because they are inevitably attained without severing the roots of virtue. This is called answering separately. If someone asks: Does someone who has severed the roots of virtue necessarily have Buddha-nature? Is it necessarily without Buddha-nature? To this, one should remain silent and not answer. Bodhisattva Light Protector asked: World Honored One, I have heard that not answering is to remain silent and not answer. Now, for what reason and cause does the Thus-Gone One say that answering is to remain silent and not answer? The World Honored One said: Son of the lineage, I did not say that remaining silent is not answering. Son of the lineage, there are two types of remaining silent: negation and non-attachment. Therefore, remaining silent is called not answering. Bodhisattva Light Protector asked the World Honored One: World Honored One, as the World Honored One said, how can the cause be called past, present, and future? Is the result also past, present, and future, and also not past, present, and future? The World Honored One said: Son of the lineage, the five skandhas have two aspects: cause and result. The five skandhas of cause are past, present, and future. The five skandhas of result are past, present, and future, and also not past, present, and future. Son of the lineage, all afflictions of ignorance are Buddha-nature. Why? Because they become the cause of Buddha-nature.

Furthermore, obtaining the five aggregates of virtue from ignorance and actions, etc., which are afflictions, is called Buddha-nature. Because one will obtain from the five aggregates of virtue up to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, therefore I said in the sutras that previously the Buddha-nature of sentient beings is like blood and milk mixed together. Blood refers to ignorance and actions, etc., which are afflictions. Milk refers to the five aggregates of virtue. Therefore, I obtain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment from afflictions and the five aggregates of virtue. Just as the body of sentient beings is formed from semen and blood, so is Buddha-nature. The Buddha-nature of Stream-enterers and Once-returners is like milk because they have slightly cut off afflictions. The Buddha-nature of Non-returners is like yogurt. The Buddha-nature of Arhats is like butter. The Buddha-nature from Pratyekabuddhas to the ten Bhumis of Bodhisattvas is like ghee. The Buddha-nature of the Tathagatas is like the essence of butter. Son of lineage, because it is now obscured by afflictions, it is not seen. For example, in a fragrant mountain, there is a grass called "grass endurance" that all cows do not eat. Buddha-nature is also like that. This is a differentiated answer. Bodhisattva Light Protector asked: "Bhagavan, Buddha-nature has five, six, and seven aspects. If it exists in the future, can it be said that a person who has severed the roots of virtue has Buddha-nature?" The Bhagavan said: "Son of lineage, just as sentient beings have previous karma, because of that karma, the result will ripen in this life. Future karma does not arise because it has not been produced, so the result does not arise. There are present afflictions. If there were no afflictions, then all sentient beings would now clearly see Buddha-nature. Therefore, those who have severed the roots of virtue...
