And that too is impermanent. If it is impermanent, how can it be called nirvana? If nirvana does not exist, who will become a noble one? Therefore, I think that noble ones do not exist. Again, I think that the path of the noble ones is not obtained from dependent origination. If the path of the noble ones is obtained from dependent origination, why have not all become noble ones? If all are not noble ones, I think that noble ones and the path of the noble ones do not exist. Again, I think that the right view of the path of the noble ones has two causes and conditions. What are the two? Hearing the Dharma from others and attending to it inwardly by oneself. If those two causes and conditions arise from conditions, then that which arises from conditions will also arise from conditions. Thus, one producing another will lead to the fault of having no end. If those two things do not arise from conditions, why have not all sentient beings obtained them? I think that when one understands in this way, one will cut off the roots of virtue. Son of good family, if any sentient being thoroughly believes that there are no causes and effects, then that person will cut off the five roots of faith and so on. Son of good family, cutting off the roots of virtue is not due to being inferior, weak, dull-witted, and ignorant. It is not cut off by being born in the heavens and the three lower realms, and creating schism in the Sangha is also the same. The Bodhisattva Light Protector asked: Blessed One, when will that person generate roots of virtue again? The Blessed One replied: Son of good family, that person will generate roots of virtue at two times: first, when sentient beings fall into hell, and when sentient beings emerge from hell. Son of good family, there are three kinds of virtue: past, present, and future. Among them, the past has ceased by its very nature, so the cause has ceased and is exhausted, but the fruit has not yet ripened, so one should not say that the fruit of the past has been cut off. Cutting off the cause of the three times is called cutting off. The Bodhisattva Light Protector asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, if the cause of the three times is cut off, then good

If it is said to cut off the root of virtue, if the one who cuts off the root of virtue possesses Buddha-nature, then is that Buddha-nature past? Is it present? Is it future? Or does it pervade all three times? If it is past, how can it be said to be permanent? Buddha-nature is permanent, therefore it is not past. If it is future, how can it be said to be permanent? If the Bhagavan said that all sentient beings will surely attain it, if they will surely attain it, then why is it said to be cut off? If it is present, then how can it be said to be permanent? And why is it said that one will surely be able to see it? The Tathagata said that Buddha-nature also has six aspects, namely: permanence, reality, truth, goodness, purity, and observability. If the one who cuts off the root of virtue possesses Buddha-nature, then it should not be called cutting off the root of virtue. If there is no Buddha-nature, why is it said that all sentient beings possess Buddha-nature? If one possesses Buddha-nature and it can also be cut off, then why did the Bhagavan say it is permanent? The Bhagavan said: Son of good family, the Buddha Bhagavan answers questions for sentient beings in four ways. What are the four? निश्चित(nges par lan btab pa, to answer definitively), to answer separately, to answer as asked, and to set aside and not answer. Son of good family, how is it to answer definitively? If someone asks, does one who does evil deeds obtain good results? Or does one obtain evil results? To this, one answers definitively that one obtains evil results, and it is the same with good deeds. If someone asks whether the Tathagata possesses omniscient wisdom? To this, one answers definitively that he possesses omniscient wisdom. If someone asks whose Dharma is pure? To this, one answers definitively that it is pure. If someone asks whether the Buddha's attendants abide in accordance with the Dharma? To this,

Answering by saying, "It is certain to abide according to the Dharma," that is called "certainly answering." What is answering by distinguishing? For example, I have spoken of the Four Noble Truths. What are the four? They are suffering, origin, cessation, and path. Among these, what is the Truth of Suffering? Because there are eight types of suffering, it is called the Truth of Suffering. What is the Truth of Origin? Because there is the cause of the five aggregates, it is called the Truth of Origin. What is the Truth of Cessation? The complete and utter cessation of desire, hatred, and delusion is called the Truth of Cessation. What is the Truth of the Path? The thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are the Truth of the Path. That is called answering by distinguishing. Now, how is it answering according to the question asked? For example, as I have said that all phenomena are impermanent, and someone asks, "For what Dharma did the Blessed One Buddha say is impermanent?" To that, the Tathagata says, "Because of conditioned phenomena, it is impermanent." The same is true for selflessness. For example, if I say that all phenomena are burning, and someone else asks, "For what Dharma did the Tathagata say that all phenomena are burning?" To that, the Tathagata says, "Because of desire, hatred, and delusion, all phenomena are said to be burning." Thus, one answers. Son of good family, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, great love, great compassion, the three mindfulnesses, the eighty million names of samadhi such as courageous conduct, the thirty-two major marks, the eighty minor marks, the thirty-five thousand names of samadhi such as the five wisdom seals, the four thousand five hundred names of samadhi such as the vajra-like samadhi, and countless immeasurable expedient samadhis, and so forth, such Dharma is the nature of the Tathagata Buddha. Thus, the nature of the Buddha possesses seven things, namely permanence, self,
