People, though severing the roots of virtue due to the afflictions of the present time, will have the roots of virtue reborn again through the power of the future Buddha-nature. Light-Protector (Od-srung) asked: Blessed One, how will the roots of virtue be generated in the future? Son of good family, just as a lamp and the sun, though not yet arisen, can illuminate darkness, so too, the future Buddha-nature causes the future Buddha-nature of sentient beings to arise. This is called answering by distinguishing. Bodhisattva Light-Protector (Od-srung) asked: Blessed One, if the five aggregates are the Buddha-nature, why is it said that the Buddha-nature of sentient beings is not within, not without? The Blessed One replied: Son of good family, why do you become doubtful in this way? Did I not say before that the Buddha-nature of sentient beings is the Middle Way? Light-Protector (Od-srung) asked: Blessed One, I am not doubtful, but because sentient beings cannot understand this Middle Way, I asked in this way. Son of good family, that which sentient beings do not understand is the Middle Way, and it has both understanding and non-understanding. Son of good family, I said that the Buddha-nature is not within, not without, in order to make sentient beings understand what they do not understand. Why is that? Because those inferior sentient beings each think that some say the Buddha-nature dwells within the five aggregates, just as fruit is inside a container; others say it exists outside the aggregates, like empty space. Therefore, the Thus-Gone One spoke of the Middle Way. The Buddha-nature of sentient beings is not the six internal sense bases, nor the six external sense bases, but the Middle Way is called the union of inner and outer. Therefore, the Thus-Gone One said that the Buddha-nature itself is the Middle Way. So it is said. That which is not within and not without is called the Middle Way. This is called answering by distinguishing. Furthermore, son of good family, as

If it is said that it is neither inside nor outside, then some sons of the lineage say that the Buddha-nature itself is an outsider. Why is that? Because the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, for immeasurable kalpas, cuts off afflictions with the Dharma of outsiders, intensely subdues his mind, and for the benefit of sentient beings, then attains the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Therefore, it is said that the Buddha-nature is an outsider. Some say that the Buddha-nature is entering into internal learning. Why is that? Because even if the Bodhisattva practices the Dharma of outsiders for immeasurable kalpas, if he abandons the internal Dharma, he will not attain the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Therefore, it is said that the Buddha-nature is entering into internal learning. Therefore, the Tathagata, in order to avert from the two extremes, said that the Buddha-nature is neither inside nor outside, and also said that it is outside and inside, which is called the Middle Way. Furthermore, some sons of the lineage say that the Buddha-nature is the Vajra-like body of the Tathagata, endowed with the thirty-two marks and eighty minor marks. Why is that? Because it is not deceptive. Again, some say that the Buddha-nature is the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, great love, great compassion, the three close placements of mindfulness, and all samadhis, such as the samadhi of heroic gait. Why is that? Because from these samadhis, the Vajra-like body adorned with the thirty-two marks and eighty minor marks will arise. Therefore, the Tathagata, in order to avert from the two extremes, said that the Buddha-nature is neither inside nor outside, and also said that it is inside and outside, which is called the Middle Way. Furthermore, some sons of the lineage say that the Buddha-nature is intense attention within. Why is that? Because the other shore of abandoning intense attention within...

cannot attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Therefore, it is said that Buddha-nature is intensely contemplated within. Some say that Buddha-nature is hearing the Dharma from others. Why? Because hearing the Dharma from others leads to intense contemplation within. If the Dharma is not heard, contemplation will not occur. Therefore, it is said that Buddha-nature is hearing the Dharma from others. Therefore, to avoid the two extremes, the Thus-Gone One said that Buddha-nature is neither within nor without, and also spoke of within and without, which is called the Middle Way. Furthermore, some sons of good families say that Buddha-nature is external, namely, the perfection of giving. Because unsurpassed perfect enlightenment is attained through the perfection of giving. Therefore, it is said that the perfection of giving is Buddha-nature. Some say that Buddha-nature is internal, namely, the remaining five perfections. Why? Because it is known that apart from these five things, there is no cause or result called Buddha-nature. Therefore, it is said that the five perfections are Buddha-nature. Therefore, to avoid the two extremes, the Thus-Gone One said that Buddha-nature is neither within nor without, but also within and without, which is called the Middle Way. Furthermore, some sons of good families say that Buddha-nature dwells within, for example, like the precious jewel on the forehead of a mighty man. Why? Because permanence, bliss, self, and purity are like a jewel. Therefore, it is said that Buddha-nature is within. Some say that Buddha-nature is external, for example, like a treasure of jewels in the house of a poor man. Why? Because it can be seen by means of skillful methods. Similarly, Buddha-nature is outside of sentient beings
