For example, if a person encounters a patch of muddy water, they might hesitate, wondering if the water is deep or shallow because they have seen it before. If they haven't seen it before, why would they hesitate? The Blessed One said, 'Son of good family, what is called nirvana is the cutting off of suffering.' What is not nirvana is suffering. All sentient beings see two aspects: suffering and non-suffering. What is called suffering and non-suffering are hunger, thirst, cold, heat, anger, joy, sickness, well-being, old age, youth, birth, death, bondage, liberation, separation from loved ones, and meeting with enemies. When sentient beings see these, they doubt when they will be separated from things tormented by such suffering. Therefore, sentient beings doubt nirvana. The idea in your mind that the person has never seen muddy water before, why would they doubt? That is not the case. Why? Because that person has seen it in another place before, so even if they haven't been there before, they will doubt it.' It was asked, 'Blessed One, if that person has seen places that are deep and shallow before, and has not doubted, then why would they doubt?' The Blessed One said, 'Son of good family, because they have not been there before, they will doubt. Therefore, I said that one doubts what one does not understand.' Bodhisattva Light Protector said to the Blessed One, 'Blessed One, as the Blessed One said, doubt itself is attachment, and attachment itself is doubt, then what should one doubt?' The Blessed One said, 'Son of good family, one should doubt those who cut off the roots of virtue.' Light Protector asked, 'Blessed One, who will cut off the roots of virtue?' The Blessed One said, 'Son of good family, those who abandon the virtuous friend who is bright with wisdom, sharp in faculties, and skilled in distinctions, who do not listen to the true Dharma, who have unkind thoughts, and who do not abide properly, will cut off the roots of virtue. Having abandoned these four things, there is neither giving nor possessions in one's mind.'

They think, "Why is that? Giving is giving away wealth. If giving has a result that ripens, then the giver will always become poor. Why is that? Because seeds and fruits are similar, therefore it is said that there is no cause and effect. To say that there is no cause and effect is called cutting off the root of virtue." Again, they think, "Giving, receiving, and material things are all impermanent, not staying or abiding. Since they do not stay or abide, how can one say, 'This is giving, this is receiving, this is a material thing'? If there is no receiving, how can the result ripen? Therefore, it is said that there is no cause and effect." To say that there is no cause and effect is to be known as cutting off the root of virtue. Again, they think, "When giving is given, there are five kinds of things. Whether the receiver takes it and does good or does evil, the giver will not have the result of good or evil ripen. Just as the worldly law is that fruit is born from seeds, and fruit becomes seeds again. The cause is the giver, and the result is the receiver. In this way, the receiver cannot cause the giver to obtain good or evil through good and evil dharmas. Therefore, they think that there is no cause and effect." Whoever says that there is no cause and effect is to be known as cutting off the root of virtue. Again, they think, "The object of giving does not exist." Why is that? Because the object of giving cannot be demonstrated. If it cannot be demonstrated, how can the result of virtue ripen? Whatever has no result of good or evil cannot be demonstrated. Since the object cannot be demonstrated, know that there is no ripening of the result of good or evil. Therefore, there is no giving, and there is no cause and effect," they think. Whoever thinks in this way and then says that there is no cause and effect is to be known as cutting off the root of virtue. The Great Nirvana Sutra, Volume Forty-Six. Again, they think, "Giving
