It possesses six qualities: permanence, truth, reality, goodness, purity, and visibility. My attendants, hearing this, did not understand my meaning and said that the Tathagata said that the Buddha-nature of sentient beings exists outside of sentient beings. Noble son, I also said that the Buddha-nature of sentient beings is like the sky. The sky is not past, not future, not present, not inside, not outside. Just as form, sound, smell, taste, and touch are gathered, so too is the Buddha-nature. My attendants, hearing this, did not understand my meaning and said that the Tathagata said that the Buddha-nature of sentient beings exists outside of sentient beings. Noble son, I also said that the Buddha-nature of sentient beings is like a treasure trove of jewels in the home of a poor woman, like a wish-fulfilling jewel vajra that appears immediately in the hand of a powerful man, and like the nectar spring of a Chakravartin king. My attendants, hearing this, did not understand my meaning and said that the Tathagata said that the Buddha-nature of sentient beings exists outside of sentient beings. Noble son, I also said that even those who have lost the four roots, have wrong views, slander the profound and vast sutras, and commit the five heinous crimes have Buddha-nature. Although these sentient beings may or may not have virtuous qualities, the Buddha-nature is virtuous. My attendants, hearing this, did not understand my meaning and said that the Tathagata said that the Buddha-nature of sentient beings exists outside of sentient beings. Noble son, I also said that sentient beings themselves are Buddha-nature. Why? Because there is no attainment of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment outside of sentient beings. Therefore, I told King Srngavera the analogy of the yak.

And like blind men describing the characteristics of an elephant, although not completely conforming to the elephant itself, yet not completely unrelated to the elephant. Similarly, saying that there is the Tathāgatagarbha between the skandha of form and the skandha of consciousness of sentient beings is also like that. Although it is not the Tathāgatagarbha, it is also not non-Tathāgatagarbha. Just as I told the king the analogy of the nine linked jewels, the Tathāgatagarbha is also like that. Son of good family, my attendants, hearing me say this, not understanding my meaning, make various explanations. Like blind men milking a cow, the Tathāgatagarbha is also like that. Because of these causes and conditions, some say that even those who have broken the four root vows, slander the profound and vast sutras, commit the five heinous crimes, and those with wrong views, etc., all have the Tathāgatagarbha. Some say that they do not have the Tathāgatagarbha. Son of good family, I have said in all the sutras: If one person appears in the world, he will benefit many people; in one country, two Chakravartin kings appear; in one world, two Buddhas appear, such things are impossible. In one four-continent world, from the eight protectors up to Paranirmita-vasavartin, there are two, such things are impossible. I have said that in Jambudvipa, from the sentient beings of Avici hell up to the peak of existence, my attendants, hearing me say this, not understanding my meaning, say that the Tathāgata has said that there are no Buddhas in the ten directions. However, the Mahayana sutras say that there are Buddhas in the ten directions. Son of good family, such disputes are the realm of the Bhagavan, and the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas cannot understand them. If someone has doubts about this, they can also destroy immeasurable afflictions like Mount Sumeru. If one believes in this without any doubt, that is attachment and clinging. The Bodhisattva Light Protector asked the Bhagavan:

Thus he requested. "Bhagavan, how is it that one is attached and clinging?" The Bhagavan said, "Son of good family, if someone hears from others, or sees by looking at the sutras himself, or follows the teachings of others, and is unable to give up the things to which he is attached, that is called attachment and clinging." Light Increase asked, "Bhagavan, is such attachment and clinging virtuous? Is it not virtuous?" He said, "Son of good family, such attachment and clinging should not be called virtuous. Why is that? Because it is not able to cut the net of doubt." Light Increase asked, "Bhagavan, if that person has no doubt from the beginning, why is it said that he is unable to cut the net of doubt?" He said, "That which has no doubt is called doubt." He asked, "Bhagavan, if someone says that one who has entered the stream will not fall into the three lower realms, is that also attachment and doubt?" "Son of good family, that is certainty, and it should not be called doubt. Why is that? Son of good family, for example, a person has previously seen a person and a tree. Later, walking at night, he sees a piece of wood from afar and doubts whether it is a person or a tree. Son of good family, just as one has previously seen a monk and a wandering ascetic, and later, at some time, sees a monk from afar on the road and doubts whether it is a monk or a wandering ascetic. Son of good family, some people have previously seen a yellow cow and a water buffalo, and later see a cow from afar and doubt whether it is a yellow cow or a water buffalo. Son of good family, all sentient beings will develop doubt later if they have previously seen two kinds of things. Why is that? Because the mind has not realized it. If I had not said that one who has entered the stream will fall into the three lower realms and will not fall into the three lower realms, why would he develop a mind of doubt?" Light Increase asked, "Bhagavan, as the Bhagavan said, having seen it before, one later becomes doubtful. Some people become doubtful without having seen two kinds of things. Is there no such case? What is it? For example, Nirvana. Bhagavan,"
