are pure. Among them, the donor has faith in cause and effect and in giving, and the recipient has no faith in cause and effect and in giving; the recipient has faith in cause and effect and in giving, and the donor has no faith in cause and effect and in giving; both the donor and the recipient believe, and both the donor and the recipient do not believe. Among these four types of giving, the first three are pure." After saying this, my attendants heard this and, not understanding my meaning, said that giving is only faith, which is what the Thus-Gone One said. Son of good family, I also said at one time that when giving, one should give five things. What are the five? Giving color, giving strength, giving happiness, giving life, and giving fearlessness. Because of this, the donor will obtain five kinds of ripened fruits." After saying this, my attendants heard this and, not understanding my meaning, said that giving itself is the five aggregates, which is what the Buddha said. Son of good family, I also said at one time that Nirvana is the complete cessation of afflictions forever, without any remainder. Just as fire dies and has no law of rebirth, so is Nirvana. What is called empty space is nothing at all. For example, what is nothing in the world is called empty space, because it is not cut off by the cause of wisdom, so it is nothing. If it exists, it should also have cause and condition. If there are cause and condition, there should be exhaustion and cessation. Because it is not so, there is no exhaustion and cessation." After saying this, my attendants heard this and, not understanding my meaning, said that the Blessed One said that there are no three unconditioned dharmas. Son of good family, I also said at one time to the son of Maudgalyayana. Maudgalyayana, what is called Nirvana is only a verbal expression, a footprint, the ultimate place, and fearlessness.

Great teacher! Great fruit! Perfected wisdom! Great patience! Unobstructed samadhi! Great Dharma realm! The taste of nectar is difficult to see! If Maudgalyayana said there is no nirvana, why did you say that those who slander will fall into hell? My attendants heard this and, not understanding my intention, said that the Thus-gone One said there is nirvana. Again, on one occasion, I said to Maudgalyayana: Maudgalyayana, from the eye having no essence to the body, everything has no essence. Thus, having no essence is called emptiness, such as food that changes and digests, and all sounds are also called emptiness. My attendants heard this and, not understanding my intention, said that empty space and the unconditioned certainly exist, as the Buddha said. Again, on one occasion, I said to Maudgalyayana: Maudgalyayana, if someone, without having attained the fruit of stream-entry, abides in patience, then the ripening of the three evil destinies that are cut off is immeasurable, and know that this is not prevented by the cause of wisdom. My attendants heard this and, not understanding my intention, said that this is not prevented by the cause of wisdom, as the Buddha said. Son of the lineage, I also once explained the middle way to a monk called the "intermediate" monk. If a monk contemplates form, whether past, future, present, near, far, coarse, or subtle, then such forms are not self or belonging to self. If a monk contemplates in this way, he can cut off the existence of form. The intermediate monk asked: How are form and name called? The Buddha replied: The four great elements are form, and the four aggregates are name. My attendants heard this and, not understanding my intention, said that form is certainly the four great elements, as the Thus-gone One said.

Son of lineage, I say again, just as an image appears due to a mirror, so is form. Due to the four great elements, it is thus large, small, rough, smooth, blue, yellow, red, white, long, short, square, round, drooping, light, heavy, cold, hot, hungry, thirsty, smoke, clouds, and there are gaps. That is created form, like a rock. Thus it was said. My attendants, having heard this said, not understanding my meaning, said thus: The four great elements are also created form, and some of the four great elements are not created form, thus the Thus-Gone One said. Son of lineage, in the past there was a son of the King of the Bodhi Tree who said thus: If a monk upholds the precepts, if he generates an unwholesome mind, then at that time the monk's precepts are ruined. I then said to the son of the King of the Bodhi Tree: There are seven aspects to precepts, there is non-manifest form from body and speech. Due to non-manifest form, even if the mind dwells in unwholesomeness or non-declaration, it is not called the ruin of precepts, it is the guarding of precepts. What is the cause, what is the reason for non-manifest form? It is not that due to different forms, it becomes the cause and effect of different forms. Thus it was said. Son of lineage, my attendants, having heard this said, not understanding my meaning, said thus: The Buddha said that there is non-manifest form. Son of lineage, I said thus in other sutras: Precepts are the prevention of unwholesome dharmas, if one does not do unwholesome things, then one is guarding the precepts. Thus it was said. My attendants, having heard this said, not understanding my meaning, said thus: The Thus-Gone One said that non-manifest form is uncertain.
