Raro! Son of lineage, I have said in the sutras as follows: From the noble form aggregate to the consciousness aggregate, it arises from the cause and condition of ignorance. All base actions are similar to this, from ignorance arises craving, and it should be known that craving itself is ignorance. From craving arises grasping, therefore, it should be known that grasping itself is ignorance and craving. From grasping arises existence, therefore, it should be known that existence itself is ignorance, existence, and grasping. From existence arises feeling, therefore, it should be known that feeling itself is formation and existence. From the cause of feeling arise name and form, ignorance, craving, grasping, existence, formation, feeling, contact, consciousness, and the six sense sources, etc. Therefore, feeling is the twelve links of dependent origination. My attendants, having heard this, do not understand my meaning and say that the Tathagata said that there is nothing that arises from the mind. Son of lineage, I have said in the sutras as follows: From the eye and form, appearance and evil desire, eye consciousness arises. The so-called evil desire is ignorance, and when seeking with the nature of desire, it is called craving. The condition of craving is grasping, and grasping is called karma. The condition of karma is consciousness, the condition of consciousness is name and form, the condition of name and form is the six sense sources, the condition of the six sense sources is contact, the condition of contact is perception and feeling, faith, confidence, diligence, meditation, and wisdom. Such dharmas, although born from the condition of feeling, are not feeling. Son of lineage, my attendants, having heard this, do not understand my meaning and say that the Tathagata said that there is something that arises from the mind. Son of lineage, at some times I have said that there is only one kind of existence, and at some times I have said that there are two kinds of existence, three, four, and five.

Six, seven, eight, nine, ten to twenty-five were spoken. My attendants, hearing this said, not understanding my meaning, said that the Tathagata had said that there are five cravings and six existences. Son of good family, once in the past, when I was dwelling in the Nyagrodha Grove in the country of Śrāvastī, a man named Śākya Great Name came to me and asked, "How does one become an Upāsaka?" I replied, "If a son or daughter of good family is endowed with the faculties and has taken refuge in the Three Jewels, that is called an Upāsaka." Śākya Great Name asked, "World Honored One, how does one become a one-part Upāsaka?" I replied, "Śākya Great Name, whoever takes refuge in the Three Jewels and receives one precept is called a one-part Upāsaka." My attendants, hearing this said, not understanding my meaning, said that even if the precepts of an Upāsaka are not fully complete, the Buddha allows it. Son of good family, I once dwelt on the bank of the Ganges River, and at that time Kātyāyana came to me and asked, "World Honored One, if I were to receive the Dharma of the limbs of training for sentient beings for the time of one umbrella, one day, one time, or one moment, would they become limbs of training?" I replied, "Bhikkhu, that would obtain merit, but it would not be called obtaining the limbs of training." My attendants, hearing this said, not understanding my meaning, said that if one possesses the eight limbs of training, one has received the eight precepts, as the Tathagata has said. Son of good family, I have said this in the Sutra: If any Bhikkhu violates the four root vows, he is not called a Bhikkhu, but a broken Bhikkhu, a lost and degenerated Bhikkhu. The sprout of the fruit of virtue does not grow, just as a seed that is burned does not produce fruit, and a palm tree whose head is cut off does not produce fruit, so too is a Bhikkhu who has violated the four root vows. My attendants, hearing this said,

Because they do not understand my intention, they say that the Tathagata has said that if the four roots of monks are lost, the discipline of monks will be lost. Son of good family, I have said in the sutras to Tsunda that there are four kinds of monks. What are the four? Those who have reached the end of enlightenment, those who teach enlightenment, those who take enlightenment, and those who denigrate enlightenment. Among them, the loss of the four roots is said to be the denigration of enlightenment. After my attendants heard this, because they did not understand my intention, they said that the Tathagata had said that even if the four roots of monks are lost, the discipline itself will not be lost. Son of good family, I have taught in the sutras that monks have one vehicle, one path, one conduct, and one aim. In this way, from one vehicle to one aim, they bring great peace to sentient beings and completely cut off all bonds, sorrows, sufferings, and causes of suffering, leading all sentient beings to one state. After my attendants heard this, because they did not understand my intention, they said that the Tathagata had said that from stream-enterers to arhats, all of them will attain complete enlightenment. Son of good family, I have said in the sutras that a stream-enterer, after being born seven times among gods and humans, will be completely liberated from suffering. A once-returner, after being born once among gods and humans, will be completely liberated from suffering. A non-returner has five types: some will be completely liberated from suffering in the middle, and some will be completely liberated from suffering at the very end. There are two types of arhats: present and future. The present ones also cut off the five aggregates of affliction, and the future ones also cut off the five aggregates of affliction. After my attendants heard this, because they did not understand my intention, they said that the Tathagata had said that from stream-enterers to arhats, they will not attain complete enlightenment. Son of good family, I have said in this sutra that the nature of the Buddha is real.
