I said, "It is so." And again, at one time, I said to beings that what is called "self" is inherent nature. For example, the internal and external causes and conditions, the twelve links of dependent origination, the five aggregates of sentient beings, mind, realms, the merits of the world, the power of karma, and the world governed by deities, these are what I called "self." My attendants, hearing this, did not understand my intention and said, "The Tathagata has definitely said that there is a 'self'." Son of good family, at another time, a monk came to where I was and asked, "Bhagavan, what is meant by 'self'? Who is referred to as 'self'? And for what reason is it called 'self'?" Then I said to that monk, "Monk, there is no 'self' and 'mine'. What is meant by 'non-existence' is that it has never existed from the beginning, nor does it exist now. From existence, it will eventually disappear; at the time of initial birth, it does not come from anywhere, and at the time of final cessation, it does not go anywhere. Although the result of karma exists, no one has created it. There is no abandonment of aggregates, nor is there acceptance of aggregates. Just as you asked what is meant by 'self', that 'self' is precisely that. You asked 'who is the self', that is karma. For what reason is it called 'self', that is existence. Monk, just as when two hands clap together, a sound arises between them, 'self' is similar to that, it is called 'self' due to the causal relationship of mind, karma, and existence." "Monk, the form of all sentient beings is not self. There is no form within self, and there is no self within form, and so on up to consciousness. Monk, those who, like the Tirthikas, claim there is a self, it is not different from the aggregates; to say that there is a self apart from the aggregates, there is no such place. The formations of all sentient beings are like illusions created by magic, like mirages. Monk, the five aggregates are impermanent, without pleasure, without self, and impure." Son of good family, at that time, countless monks realized that these five aggregates are without self and without what belongs to self.

Through realization, the fruit of Arhatship was attained. Son of the lineage, my attendants, having heard this, not understanding my intention, said that the Tathagata definitely spoke of no-self. Son of the lineage, I have also said in the sutras that this body arises from the aggregation of three things. That is, the body arises from the aggregation of father, mother, and intermediate aggregates. Again, I once said that a non-returning individual manifestly enters nirvana, and if the five intermediate aggregates enter nirvana. This was also said as, the five intermediate aggregates, with their senses fully complete and clear, are the previous karma, just like the essence of ghee. Son of the lineage, I once said that the five intermediate aggregates of sinful beings are like rough rada in the world. The five intermediate aggregates of beings who only do good are like white cloth from Shravasti. My attendants, having heard this, not understanding my intention, said that the Tathagata spoke of the existence of five intermediate aggregates. Thus they said. Son of the lineage, I also said to beings who have committed the five heinous crimes, if they commit the five heinous crimes, beings who commit the heinous crimes will fall into hell. I also said that a monk named Kumararuci, as soon as this body separates, immediately and without obstruction falls into the hell of heinous crimes. I also said to one named Sarvatraga, Sarvatraga, if there are five intermediate aggregates, then there are also six realms of existence. It was also said that formless beings do not have five intermediate aggregates. Son of the lineage, my attendants, having heard this, not understanding my intention, said that the Tathagata definitely spoke of the non-existence of five intermediate aggregates. Thus they said. Son of the lineage, I said in the sutras that there is regression. Why is that? Because countless monks who are lazy and indolent do not strive for enlightenment, so these five kinds of regression were spoken of for them. Fond of doing many things and worldly chatter.
