Attachment and clinging to myself and external objects is grasping. The actions created by body, speech, and mind through internal and external phenomena are existence. The consciousness of the present moment is the future birth. The name and form, the six sense bases, contact, and feeling of the present moment are the aging, sickness, and death of the future time. These are called the twelve links of dependent origination. Son of lineage, all sentient beings have these twelve links of dependent origination, but if they die before they are fully developed and are still in a rudimentary state, then they do not have the twelve links of dependent origination. From the initial birth to aging and death, they possess these twelve links. Beings in the form realm have three kinds of feeling, three kinds of contact, and desire, etc. Although they do not have aging and death, they are still said to possess the twelve links. Beings in the formless realm, although they do not have formlessness until aging and death, are still said to possess the twelve links, because they will definitely attain them. Therefore, it is said that all sentient beings equally possess the twelve links of dependent origination. Son of lineage, the Buddha-nature is also the same. Because all sentient beings will definitely attain unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment, therefore I say that all sentient beings have Buddha-nature. Son of lineage, there is a grass on the snowy mountains called "enduring grass." If a cow eats it, it will produce the essence of butter. There is also another grass that, if a cow eats it, will not produce the essence of butter. Although there is no essence of butter, it cannot be said that there is no enduring grass on the snowy mountains. Similarly, the Buddha-nature is also the same. The Thus-Gone One is like the snowy mountain, the Great Nirvana is like the enduring grass, and the twelve divisions of scripture are like other grasses that are not that kind. If any sentient being hears, upholds, or inquires about this Great Nirvana, they will see the Buddha-nature. Although one has not heard that there is Buddha-nature from the twelve divisions of scripture, one cannot say that there is no Buddha-nature.

It is not permissible to regress. Son of lineage, the nature of the Buddha is form, and it is also not form. It is not form, and it is also not not form. It is a mark, and it is also not a mark. It is not a mark, and it is also not not a mark. It is one, and it is also not one. It is not one, and it is also not not one. It is not permanent, and it is not annihilation. It is also not not permanent, and it is also not not annihilation. It is existent, and it is also non-existent. It is also not existent, and it is also not non-existent. It is exhausted, and it is also not exhausted. It is also not exhausted, and it is also not not exhausted. It is a cause, and it is also a result. It is also not a cause, and it is also not a non-result. It is also not meaning. It is not non-meaning, and it is also not not non-meaning. It is a letter, and it is also not a letter. It is not a letter, and it is also not not a letter. Among these, what is called "form"? It is the vajra-like body. What is not form? It is the eighteen unmixed dharmas that are not form. What is not form and also not not form? It is the absence of a definite characteristic for form and non-form. Among these, what is called a "mark"? It is the thirty-two marks. What is not a mark? It is that marks are not manifestly visible to all sentient beings. What is not a mark and also not not a mark? It is that marks and non-marks are not definite. Among these, what is one? All sentient beings are of one vehicle. What is not one? It is the teaching of the three vehicles. What is not one and also not not one? It is countless dharmas. What is not permanent? It is what appears from conditions. What is not annihilation? It is being free from the view of annihilation. What is not permanent and also not non-annihilation? It is the absence of beginning and end. What is existent? All sentient beings are existent. What is non-existent? It is what appears through skillful means. What is not existent and also not non-existent? It is the characteristic of space. What is exhausted? It is obtaining the power of the samadhi of courageous going. What is not exhausted? It is not permanent. What is not exhausted and also not not exhausted? It is the characteristic of the exhaustion of all.
