Having arrived at the bank of a river with about five hundred wanderers, they came to me and said to each other, 'How can one obtain a body like a vajra? If Gautama does not teach the view of annihilation, we will torment him with discipline and morality.' Son of good family, at that time, with the wisdom of knowing the minds of others, I knew the thoughts of those wanderers and said to them, 'Why do you think I am teaching the view of annihilation?' Those wanderers replied, 'Gautama, you say in all the sutras that all sentient beings are without self. If you say that there is no self, why is it not a view of annihilation? If there is no self, who will keep the precepts and who will break them?' The Blessed One said, 'I have not said that all sentient beings are without self. I have always said that all sentient beings have the Buddha-nature. Is not the Buddha-nature itself the self? Therefore, I do not teach the view of annihilation. Because all sentient beings have not seen the Buddha-nature, they have no permanence, no self, no happiness, and no purity. Whoever speaks in this way is said to be teaching the view of annihilation.' At that time, those wanderers, having heard the teaching that the Buddha-nature itself is the self, all generated the mind of unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. Immediately they renounced and diligently practiced the path to enlightenment. All beings who travel in the sky, water, and land also generated the mind of unsurpassed enlightenment. Having generated the mind in this way, they immediately abandoned their bodies. Son of good family, the Buddha-nature is not truly the self, but it is spoken of as the self for the sake of sentient beings. Son of good family, because there are causes and conditions, the Thus-gone One speaks of the absence of self as the self, but in reality there is no self. Although it is said in this way, it is not false. Son of good family, again, because there are causes and conditions, the self is explained as the absence of self, but in reality there is a self, but for the sake of the world it is said to be without self, but it is not false.

The nature of all dharmas is selflessness. The Tathagata taught selflessness because it is permanent. The Tathagata is the true self, and the teaching of selflessness is because of obtaining freedom. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Simhanada asked: "Bhagavan, if all sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature, which is like a vajra great power, then why do all sentient beings not see it?" The Bhagavan replied: "Son of good family, for example, colors such as blue, yellow, red, and white, and lengths such as long and short, are different and have obstruction, but a blind person cannot see them. Although they cannot be seen, it cannot be said that there are no differences in blue, yellow, red, and white, and shapes of long and short. Why is that? Because although a blind person cannot see, those with eyes can see. The Buddha-nature is also the same. Although all sentient beings cannot see it, the Bodhisattvas of the ten bhumis can only see a part of it, while the Tathagata sees it completely. The Bodhisattvas of the ten bhumis see the Buddha-nature as if it were a night scene, while the Tathagata sees it as if it were a daytime scene. Son of good family, for example, a person with cataracts cannot see things clearly. If a skilled doctor treats the eyes with medicine, they will be able to see things clearly with the power of the medicine. The Bodhisattvas of the ten bhumis are also the same. Although they can see the Buddha-nature, it is not clear. If they rely on the power of the samadhi of heroic progress, they will be able to see it clearly. Son of good family, if someone sees all dharmas as impermanent, selfless, without happiness, and impure, and also sees all non-dharmas as impermanent, selfless, without happiness, and impure, then they will not see the Buddha-nature. Among them, 'all' refers to samsara. 'Not all' refers to the Three Jewels. All the dharmas of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are impermanent, selfless, without happiness, and impure. And they also believe that all non-dharmas are impermanent, selfless, without happiness, and impure.
