It is also the same. Consciousness is also a result, and it is also the result of a result. The nature of the Buddha is also the same. Son of good family, therefore, the twelve links of dependent origination are unborn and unceasing, not permanent, not annihilated, not one or two, not coming, not going, not cause, not effect. Son of good family, that which is a cause but not an effect is like the Buddha-nature. That which is an effect but not a cause is like the great complete nirvana. That which is both a cause and an effect is like the dharma that arises from the twelve links of dependent origination. That which is neither a cause nor an effect is called the Buddha-nature, because it is neither a cause nor an effect, therefore it is permanent, unchanging, and unmoving. Therefore, I said in the sutras that the twelve links of dependent origination are extremely profound in meaning, unknowable, invisible, and inconceivable, and are the realm of activity of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, not knowable by Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Why is the meaning so profound? It is extremely profound because the actions and behaviors of sentient beings, although they are neither permanent nor annihilated, the fruition will ripen, and although they cease from moment to moment, they are not lost, although there is no doer, there is the karma that has been done, although there is no experience, there is the ripening of the fruit, and although the experience ceases, the fruit does not perish or disappear, and it is impossible to conceive of how all sentient beings gather and arise, and although they are accompanied by the twelve links of dependent origination, they do not know or see them, and because they do not see or know them, they are without beginning or end, and the Bodhisattvas of the tenth ground see only the beginning but not the end, while the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, see both the beginning and the end. Therefore, the Tathagatas clearly see the Buddha-nature. Son of good family, all sentient beings revolve greatly because they do not see the twelve links of dependent origination. Son of good family, just as a silkworm makes its own cocoon, it is born and dies by itself.

All sentient beings are the same. Because they do not see the Buddha-nature, they create all kinds of afflictive karma themselves, revolving in samsara like a blind man groping a wall. Son of good family, therefore I say that in all the sutras, if one sees the twelve links of dependent origination, one sees the Dharma. Seeing the Dharma, one sees the Buddha. What is called Buddha is the Buddha-nature. Why? Because the nature of all Buddhas is that. Son of good family, the wisdom of realizing the twelve links of dependent origination is of four kinds: the lowest, the intermediate, the highest, and the highest of the highest. The lowest wisdom of realization does not see the Buddha-nature. Because it does not see it, it attains the path of the Hearer. The intermediate wisdom of realization does not see the Buddha-nature. Because it does not see it, it attains the path of the Solitary Buddha. The highest wisdom of realization does not see it clearly. Because it does not see it clearly, it abides on the ten bhumis. The highest of the highest wisdom sees it clearly, and therefore attains the path of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Therefore, the twelve links of dependent origination are called Buddha-nature. Buddha-nature is ultimate emptiness. Ultimate emptiness is the Middle Way. The Middle Way is the Buddha. The Buddha is called Nirvana. Thirtieth-sixth fascicle. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Lion's Roar asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, if there is no difference between the Buddha and the Buddha-nature, then what is the use of all sentient beings diligently practicing the path? The Blessed One replied: Son of good family, your question is not like that. Although there is no difference between the Buddha and the Buddha-nature, sentient beings do not possess it. Son of good family, for example, if a person kills someone out of malice, and after killing them, feels remorse and practices the three virtuous paths, they are still called a hell being. Why? Because that person cannot avoid falling into hell. That person has the aggregates, elements, and sources of a hell being.

English

Although not intentional, they are called hell beings. Son of the lineage, therefore, when I see someone practicing virtuous Dharma in all the sutras, it is called seeing a god. Seeing someone practicing non-virtue is called seeing a hell being. Why is that? Because they will surely experience the ripening result. Son of the lineage, all beings will undoubtedly attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, therefore it is said that all beings have the Buddha-nature. Because all beings do not have the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor marks, that is why I have spoken these verses from this sutra. Initially there was, but now there is not. Initially there was not, but now there is. All phenomena of the three times of existence, there is no such place. Son of the lineage, existence is of three types: future existence, present existence, and past existence. Therefore, all beings in the future have unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, so it is called the Buddha-nature. All beings now have all kinds of afflictions, therefore they do not have the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor marks. Some beings have cut off afflictions in the past, therefore they can now see the Buddha-nature. Because of this reason, I always say that all beings have the Buddha-nature, even those with wrong views have the Buddha-nature. Even though those with wrong views and so on do not have virtuous qualities, the Buddha-nature itself is virtuous, because it will exist in the future, so those with wrong views and so on also have the Buddha-nature. Why is that? Because those with wrong views will surely manifest unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Son of the lineage, for example, if someone has milk and yogurt in their house, and another person asks, "Do you have butter?" He replies, "I have it." Although yogurt is not actually butter, it can surely be obtained through skillful means.
