Without obstruction, constantly abiding. Son of the lineage, because you possess these two assemblies, you dare to ask about this very profound meaning. I also, because I possess these two assemblies, am able to answer this question. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva Lion's Roar asked: World Honored One, if a Bodhisattva possesses these two assemblies, if someone asks, "Is it one or two?" why does the World Honored One answer with "one and two"? That is because all dharmas are not one and two. One and two are the characteristics of vulgar people. The World Honored One taught: Son of the lineage, if a Bodhisattva does not possess these two assemblies, he will not know one and two. A Bodhisattva who possesses these two assemblies knows one and two. And to say that there is no one or two in all dharmas is not so. Why? If there is no one or two, how can one speak of all dharmas as neither one nor two? Son of the lineage, what is called the characteristic of vulgar people, which is one and two, refers to the tenth-ground Bodhisattva, who is not a vulgar person. Why? One refers to Nirvana. Two refers to Samsara. Why does one refer to Nirvana? Because it is constant. Why does two refer to Samsara? Because it has craving for ignorance. Constant Nirvana is not the characteristic of vulgar people, and Samsara is not the characteristic of vulgar people. Therefore, possessing two assemblies allows for questioning and answering. Son of the lineage, listen carefully to your question about what is Buddha-nature, and I will explain it to you. Son of the lineage, what is called Buddha-nature is ultimate emptiness. Ultimate emptiness is wisdom. What is called emptiness is not seeing both emptiness and non-emptiness. The wise do not see emptiness, non-emptiness, permanence, impermanence, suffering.
