Happiness and, I and, all non-self are seen. Emptiness is called all of samsara. Non-emptiness is called complete nirvana. Between non-self is samsara. I am called complete nirvana, all are seen as emptiness, not seeing non-emptiness is not called the Middle Way. Not seeing between all non-self, not seeing self is not called the Middle Way. The Middle Way is called Buddha-nature. Therefore, Buddha-nature is constant and unchanging, covered by ignorance, therefore all sentient beings have not seen it. Hearers and self-enlightened ones see all as emptiness, from not seeing non-emptiness, until seeing all non-self, not seeing self. Therefore, the ultimate emptiness is not attained. Because the ultimate emptiness is not attained, the Middle Way is not practiced. Because there is no Middle Way, Buddha-nature is not seen. Son of lineage, there are three types of seeing the Middle Way: definitely practicing happiness, definitely practicing suffering, and definitely practicing suffering and happiness. Definitely practicing happiness is like this: a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, out of compassion for all sentient beings, even if residing in the Avici hell, is like touching the happiness of the third dhyana. Definitely practicing suffering is called inferior beings. Definitely practicing suffering and happiness is called hearers and self-enlightened ones. Hearers and self-enlightened ones generate the idea of the Middle Way towards suffering and happiness, therefore, although there is Buddha-nature, it is not seen. As you asked, what kind of meaning is Buddha-nature? Son of lineage, Buddha-nature is called the seed of the Middle Way of all Buddhas' unsurpassed Arhat perfect enlightenment. Furthermore, son of lineage, there are three types of paths: superior, intermediate, and inferior. Among them, inferior is called Brahma and others mistakenly regarding impermanence as permanence. Superior is called

Furthermore, one mistakenly sees permanence in the impermanence of samsara, and diligently ascribes impermanence to the Three Jewels, which are permanent. Why is it called "supreme"? Because it is for the sake of attaining the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and supreme enlightenment. What is called "intermediate" is the emptiness of ultimate truth, where impermanence is seen as permanence, and permanence is seen as impermanence. The emptiness of ultimate truth should not be called "inferior." Why? Because it is not seen by all inferior beings. Nor should it be called "supreme." Why? Because it is not supreme. The path of conduct of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is neither supreme nor inferior; therefore, it is called the Middle Way. Moreover, son of good family, the initial limits of samsara are twofold: ignorance and craving. Between these two, the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death arises; this is called the Middle Way. Thus, because the Middle Way completely destroys samsara, it is called the Middle Way. Thus, the Dharma of the Middle Way is called Buddha-nature, therefore, Buddha-nature is permanent, blissful, self, and pure. Because sentient beings do not see it, it is impermanent, without bliss, without self, and impure. If it is truly Buddha-nature, it is not impermanent, without bliss, without self, and impure. Son of good family, for example, a poor man has a treasure of jewels in his house, but if he does not see it, because he does not see it, there is no permanence, no bliss, no self, and no purity. A virtuous friend tells him, "You have a treasure of jewels and gold in your house, why are you so poor and suffering, and (experiencing) impermanence, without bliss, without self, and without purity?" Then, through skillful means, he enables him to see it. Once he sees it, that person obtains permanence, bliss, self, and purity. Buddha-nature is also like that; sentient beings do not see it. Thus, because they do not see it, there is no permanence, no bliss, no self, and no purity.

It is so. The virtuous spiritual friends, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, teach by various means and make it visible. Having seen it in this way, sentient beings obtain permanence, happiness, self, and complete purity. Furthermore, son of good family, sentient beings generate views in two ways: permanence and annihilation. Thus, these two views are not called the Middle Way, but the absence of permanence and the absence of annihilation are called the Middle Way. The absence of permanence and annihilation is called the wisdom of realizing the twelve links of dependent origination, and the wisdom of realizing it in this way is called Buddha-nature. Although these two vehicles realize dependent origination, they are not called attainment of Buddha-nature. Although Buddha-nature is realized, sentient beings do not see it because they are completely covered by ignorance, just as rabbits and horses cannot cross the river of the twelve links of dependent origination. Why is that? Because they do not see Buddha-nature. Son of good family, the wisdom of realizing the twelve links of dependent origination is the seed of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, therefore, the twelve links of dependent origination are called Buddha-nature. Son of good family, for example, haritaki turns into bile disease. Why is that? Because it becomes the cause and condition of bile disease, and the twelve links of dependent origination are also the same. Son of good family, Buddha-nature has a cause, a cause of cause, a result, and a result of result. What is called having a cause is the twelve links of dependent origination. What is called the cause of cause is wisdom. What is called having a result is unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. What is called the result of result is the unsurpassed great Nirvana. Son of good family, for example, with ignorance as the condition, actions are the result. With action as the condition, consciousness becomes the result, therefore, the nature of ignorance is both a condition and a condition of a condition.
