Now it is cut off. What is the cause? The cause is complete realization. What is the result? The result is not being devoured by demons. What is neither cause nor result? It is permanence. What is meaning? Meaning is unimpeded in gathering all things. What is non-meaning? It is unspeakable. What is neither non-meaning nor non-non-meaning? It is ultimately becoming emptiness. What is called a letter? It is that which has a name established. What is not a letter? It is that which has no name established. What is neither non-letter nor non-non-letter? It is the cutting off of all letters. What is neither suffering nor happiness? It is the cutting off of all feelings. What is not self? It is that which does not possess the eight powers. What is neither not-self nor non-not-self? It is permanence. What is neither not-self nor non-non-self? It is without action and without experience. What is called emptiness? It is emptiness in the ultimate sense. What is not emptiness? It is permanence. What is neither not-emptiness nor non-non-emptiness? It is that which becomes the fruit of virtuous Dharma. Son of good family, if someone contemplates these meanings of the Great Nirvana Sutra, understands them, and then it should be known that they have seen the Buddha-nature. The Buddha-nature is inconceivable, it is the realm of activity of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and is not known by the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Son of good family, the Buddha-nature is not the skandhas, dhatus, or ayatanas. It is not that which has existed from the beginning, nor is it that which exists and then disappears. Rather, it is through the cause and condition of virtue that sentient beings are able to see it. For example, if black iron is burned in fire, it turns red. If it is taken out and cooled, it turns black again. The black color is neither inside nor outside, but arises from cause and condition. The Buddha-nature is also the same. When the fire of afflictions of all sentient beings is extinguished, it can be seen and heard. Son of good family, just as when a seed is destroyed, a sprout grows, the characteristic of the sprout is neither inside nor outside, and so it is up to the flower and fruit, it exists due to conditions.

It has become. Son of the lineage, the supreme Mahayana Nirvana Sutra possesses immeasurable qualities. The Buddha-nature is also the same, possessing immeasurable and countless qualities. Then, Bodhisattva Mahasattva Lion's Roar asked: World Honored One, with how many dharmas does a Bodhisattva possess to clearly see the Buddha-nature? With how many dharmas does the Buddha, the World Honored One, possess to clearly see? The Buddha said: Son of the lineage, a Bodhisattva possesses ten dharmas to see the Buddha-nature, but it is not clear. What are these ten? Few desires, contentment, extreme tranquility, diligence, right mindfulness, right concentration, right wisdom, liberation, praise from liberation, and maturing sentient beings with the Great Nirvana. Bodhisattva Lion's Roar asked: World Honored One, what is the difference between few desires and contentment? The Buddha said: Son of the lineage, few desires is not seeking and not obtaining. Contentment is even if one obtains a small amount, there is no regret or annoyance in the mind. Few desires is having small desires. Contentment is for the sake of the Dharma, there is no mind oppressed by sorrow. Son of the lineage, there are three types of desires: evil desires, great desires, and desiring with desires. Among them, evil desires are, if a monk generates such a mind of desire: How can I become the leader of all the many retinues? All the Sangha of monks become my retinue? The fourfold assembly all offer to me, respectfully serve me, praise and extol me? All the Dharma that I have previously taught to the fourfold assembly, they all believe and accept my words? Kings, ministers, and all householders also respect me? I can obtain many Dharma robes, alms, bedding, medicine for sickness, and excellent dwellings, etc.? Thinking like this is the desire of samsara, called evil desire. Desire

What is called great desire? If a certain bhikṣu, for the sake of gain and fame, with a mind of desire, like the turning of four wheels, desires to know that he has attained the first bhūmi up to the tenth bhūmi, has attained unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment, has attained the fruit of an arhat up to the fruit of a stream-enterer, has attained the four dhyānas up to unobstructed wisdom, this is called great desire. What is called desire of desire? If a certain bhikṣu, for the sake of gain and fame, desires to be born as a Brahmā deva, or among the retinue of Māra, or as a great Īśvara, or as a cakravartin king, or as a kṣatriya, or as a brāhmaṇa, born and gaining power, this is called desire of desire. Not living by those three evil desires is called having few desires. What is called desire is the twenty-five existences; if those twenty-five existences are absent, that is called having few desires. Not seeking future objects of desire is called having few desires; not being attached after obtaining is called being content. Not seeking gain and fame is called having few desires; not accumulating after obtaining is called being content. Son of good family, there are those who have few desires but are not content; there are those who are content but do not have few desires; there are those who both have few desires and are content; there are those who are neither content nor have many desires. Among them, those who have few desires are stream-enterers. Those who are content are pratyekabuddhas. Those who have few desires and are content are arhats. Those who neither have few desires nor are content are bodhisattvas. Son of good family, those who have few desires and are content are also of two kinds: virtuous and non-virtuous. Among them, the non-virtuous are ordinary beings. The virtuous are noble ones and bodhisattvas. All noble ones, even having attained the path and the fruit, do not say, "I have attained." Because they do not say so, their minds are not disturbed; this is called being content. Son of good family, thus bodhisattvas mahāsattvas cultivate the Mahāyāna Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra and see the Buddha-nature.
