Falling to the ground, and when getting up, falling on one's back again. Like this, even while experiencing suffering that is of no benefit, one will not turn back from the mind of enlightenment. Son of good family, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, in order to destroy suffering and bestow happiness, from giving away all internal and external possessions, even to the point of completely giving away body and life like grass. Whoever, like that, does not spare body and life, that Bodhisattva certainly possesses a mind that does not turn back for oneself, and is certain to realize the attainment of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Furthermore, a Bodhisattva, due to the desire for Dharma, establishes a light of illumination with the body, that is, wrapping the body with cloth, smearing it with butter, and then setting it on fire. The Bodhisattva, at that time, while experiencing such great suffering, in order to reproach his own mind, speaks thus: 'This suffering, even a hundred thousandth part of the suffering of sentient beings in hell cannot be endured, yet you can endure great suffering that is of no benefit for hundreds of thousands of immeasurable eons. If even this small amount of suffering cannot be endured, then how will you go to liberate sentient beings suffering in hell?' When the Bodhisattva Mahasattva thus reflects, the body also does not feel suffering, and the mind also does not turn back, does not waver, and does not change. The Bodhisattva, at that time, will certainly realize that he will attain unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Son of good family, the Bodhisattva, at that time, even though the afflictions are not completely severed, due to the desire for Dharma, gives the limbs of the body, such as the head, hands, feet, eyes, bones, flesh, and blood, to sentient beings, and also pierces the body with iron nails, jumps off cliffs, and jumps into fire. The Bodhisattva, at that time, even while experiencing such immeasurable suffering, if the mind does not turn back, does not waver, and does not change, then that Bodhisattva certainly possesses a mind that does not turn back, and is certain to attain unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment.
