is the Buddha-nature. The Buddha-nature itself is the Tathagata, so it is said. Furthermore, the Buddha-nature is called the power of the four grounds. Why is that? Because through the cause and condition of the power of the four grounds, Bodhisattvas accomplish the benefit of all sentient beings. All sentient beings will also undoubtedly attain the power of the four grounds in the end, therefore all sentient beings have Buddha-nature. The power of the four grounds is the Buddha-nature. The Buddha-nature itself is the Tathagata, so it is said. Furthermore, the Buddha-nature is the twelve links of dependent origination. Why is that? Because of the twelve links of dependent origination, the Tathagata always abides. All sentient beings will also undoubtedly attain these twelve links of dependent origination, therefore all sentient beings have Buddha-nature. The twelve links of dependent origination are the Buddha-nature. The Buddha-nature itself is the Tathagata, so it is said. Furthermore, the Buddha-nature is the four kinds of perfect knowledge. Why is that? Because through the cause and condition of the four kinds of perfect knowledge, there is no obstruction in explaining words and meanings. Because there is no obstruction in words and meanings, it is possible to accomplish the benefit of sentient beings. Therefore, the four kinds of perfect knowledge are the Buddha-nature. The Buddha-nature itself is the Tathagata, so it is said. Furthermore, the Buddha-nature is called the crown-of-the-head samadhi. Why is that? Because meditating on this samadhi gathers all the Buddha's teachings. Therefore, the crown-of-the-head samadhi is the Buddha-nature. Even though a tenth-ground Bodhisattva meditates on this samadhi, it is not fully perfected. Although the Buddha-nature is seen, it is not clear. All sentient beings will undoubtedly attain it in the end, therefore it is said that all sentient beings have Buddha-nature. Son of the lineage, all the various dharmas mentioned above, all sentient beings

Therefore, since one can attain not eating, it is said that all sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature. Son of good family, if I were to say that form possesses the Buddha-nature, sentient beings would immediately generate perverted views upon hearing it. Due to these perverted views, they would fall into the Avici hell after their lifespan ends. The Tathagata taught the Dharma in order to cut off the hellish suffering of sentient beings. Therefore, from form up to consciousness, it is not said that they are the Buddha-nature. Son of good family, if sentient beings could clearly realize the Buddha-nature, there would be no need to cultivate the path. Even the bodhisattvas on the ten bhumis, who cultivate the eightfold noble path, only see a glimpse of the Buddha-nature. What need is there to mention those who do not cultivate? Son of good family, bodhisattvas like Manjushri, after cultivating the noble path for countless eons, only then see the Buddha-nature. How could shravakas and pratyekabuddhas see it? If sentient beings wish to clearly see the Buddha-nature, they should single-mindedly uphold, read, recite, write, explain, and teach this Nirvana Sutra, and make offerings, serve, and respect it. If they see others upholding, from upholding to respecting this sutra, they should offer them fine dwellings, clothing, bedding, and medicine for illnesses, and praise, prostrate, and speak frankly to them. Son of good family, those who in the past have attended to and made offerings to countless and boundless Buddhas, and have accumulated great roots of virtue, will then be able to hear even the name of this sutra. Son of good family, the Buddha-nature is inconceivable. The Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, the Three Jewels, are also inconceivable. All sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature, but the inability to know it is also inconceivable. The Tathagata's qualities of permanence, bliss, self, and purity are also inconceivable. The faith of all sentient beings in this Nirvana Sutra is also inconceivable. Bodhicitta

The brave Lion's Roar asked: "Bhagavan, as the Bhagavan said, it is inconceivable to have faith in this sutra of complete nirvana for all sentient beings. Bhagavan, in this mandala of retinue, eighty-five thousand kotis of sentient beings do not generate faith in this sutra. How can it be said that faith in this sutra is inconceivable?" The Bhagavan replied: "Son of good family, those sentient beings will also believe in this sutra in the future, see the Buddha-nature, and attain the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment." The Great Nirvana Sutra, Chapter Forty-three. Lion's Roar asked: "Bhagavan, how can non-retrogressing Bodhisattvas be certain that they undoubtedly possess a non-retrogressing mind?" The Bhagavan replied: "Son of good family, Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas can ascertain by examining themselves with a mind of asceticism. For example, eating only one sesame seed each day, similarly, eating only rice, beans, wheat, or white beans for seven days, and similarly, eating only one grain every seven days. When eating one grain each day, thinking: 'This ascetic practice is not helpful for benefit. Even if it is not helpful for benefit, if one does that, let alone not doing what is helpful for benefit.' Even if it is not helpful for benefit, one should still practice and endure it, because one will become non-retrogressing, so one will undoubtedly attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. When practicing asceticism for that many days, the muscles and skin of the body become weak and emaciated, like a freshly cut gourd placed in the sun. The eye sockets are like stars in a well. All the flesh is exhausted, and only bones and veins remain, like a collapsed grass hut. The exposed vertebrae are like a discarded knot of rope. The place where one sits is like a horse's hoofprint, and when sitting, the mouth faces down."
