It is permanent. Son of the lineage, for example, although the aggregates, sense bases, and elements are impermanent, what is nominally established as permanent is like the tathāgatagarbha of sentient beings, which is also the same. Son of the lineage, just as those blind people each describe the shape of an elephant, although they do not fully describe it, what they say is not separate from the elephant, so too is the description of the tathāgatagarbha, although it is not the six dharmas, it is also not separate from the six dharmas. Son of the lineage, therefore, the tathāgatagarbha of sentient beings is not form, nor is it separate from form, and so on, not self, nor is it separate from self. Thus it is said. Son of the lineage, although the tirthikas say there is a self, there is truly no self. The so-called self of sentient beings refers to the five aggregates themselves, and there is no separate self apart from the aggregates. Son of the lineage, just as reeds, leaves, stamens, and stems come together to form a lotus, and there is no separate lotus apart from them, so too is the self of sentient beings the same. Son of the lineage, just as walls, grass, and wood come together to form a house, and there is no separate house apart from them. For example, sandalwood trees, birch trees, banyan trees, udumbara trees, and so on come together to form a garden, and there is no separate garden apart from them. For example, a chariot team, an elephant team, a horse team, and an infantry team come together to form an army, and there is no separate army apart from them. For example, five colors of Kashmiri silk come together to form a brocade, and there is no separate brocade apart from them. For example, four castes come together to form a great assembly, and there is no separate great assembly apart from them, so too is the self of sentient beings the same, and there is no separate self apart from the five aggregates. Son of the lineage, because the Tathagata is eternally abiding, he is called self. The dharmakāya of the Tathagata is limitless, unobstructed, unborn, undying, and has obtained the eight freedoms.

Therefore, it is called having the nature of self. Because sentient beings actually do not have such a self and what belongs to self, and will inevitably attain ultimate emptiness in the end, it is called Buddha-nature. Son of the lineage, great love and great compassion are Buddha-nature. Why? Because great love and great compassion always surround the Bodhisattva like a shadow, and all sentient beings will inevitably attain great love and great compassion, so it is said that all sentient beings have Buddha-nature. Great love and great compassion are Buddha-nature, and Buddha-nature is thus come. Furthermore, great joy and great equanimity are also Buddha-nature. Why? Because if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not abandon the twenty-five existences, he cannot attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and all sentient beings will eventually attain it, so it is said that all sentient beings have Buddha-nature. Therefore, great joy and great equanimity are Buddha-nature, and Buddha-nature itself is thus come. Furthermore, Buddha-nature is also great faith. Why? Because relying on faith, Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas can perfect the perfection of generosity up to the perfection of wisdom. All sentient beings will inevitably attain great faith in the end, so it is said that all sentient beings have Buddha-nature. Therefore, faith is Buddha-nature, and Buddha-nature itself is thus come. Furthermore, Buddha-nature is also the ground of the only child. Why? Because relying on the cause and condition of the ground of the only child, Bodhisattvas can attain equanimity towards all sentient beings, and all sentient beings will inevitably attain the ground of the only child in the end, therefore all sentient beings have Buddha-nature, and the ground of the only child is the Buddha.
