Ki. The four great elements have no function. Just as the realms of different dharmas are dissimilar to each other, so is the Buddha-nature similar to that. Because of the realms of different dharmas, it is first seen when it meets the time. Son of the lineage! All sentient beings, because of the Buddha-nature, because of non-retrogression, are said to exist. Thus, because of non-retrogression, because of existence, because of definite attainment, because of definite seeing, it is said that all sentient beings have Buddha-nature. Son of the lineage! For example, a king commands a great minister: "Lead an elephant made of wool and show it to the blind." Then, that great minister, according to the king's command, gathers the blind people and shows them the wool elephant. Those blind people each touch it with their hands. Then the minister reports to the king again, saying, "I have shown it." Then the king summons the blind people and asks each of them, "Have you seen the wool elephant?" The blind people each reply, "I have seen it." The king says, "What is the wool elephant like?" Among them, the blind person who touched the tusk says, "The wool elephant is like a mustard seed." The one who touched the ear says, "The wool elephant is like a winnowing basket." The one who touched the head says, "The wool elephant is like a stone." The one who touched the nose says, "The wool elephant is like a yoke." The one who touched the foot says, "The shape of the wool elephant is like a pestle." The one who touched the back says, "The wool elephant is like a bed." The one who touched the belly says, "The wool elephant is like a pot." The one who touched the tail says, "The shape of the wool elephant is like a rope." Son of the lineage! Those blind people, although they do not speak of the reality of the wool elephant, they are also not not speaking. If those things are not the wool elephant, then apart from them, there is no other wool elephant. Son of the lineage! The king is like the example of the all-knowing Tathagata. The minister is like the example of the greatly expanded, completely pacified, great Nirvana. The wool elephant is like the example of the Buddha-nature. The blind people are like the example of sentient beings who are ignorant. Those sentient beings hear what the Buddha has said.

Some say that form is the Buddha-nature. Why? Because form ceases, but one succeeds another without interruption, thus attaining the thirty-two supreme marks of the Tathagata and the eternal form of the Tathagata. Because the form of the Tathagata is permanent and does not cease, it is said that form is the Buddha-nature. For example, no matter how pure gold is transformed, its color is constant and does not change. Whether it is made into a ring, a snake, or a bowl, its yellow color does not change from beginning to end. The Buddha-nature of sentient beings is also similar to this. Although the shape is impermanent, form is permanent. Therefore, it is said that form is the Buddha-nature. Some say that feeling is the Buddha-nature. Why? Because through the cause and condition of feeling, one attains the true bliss of the Tathagata. The feeling of the Tathagata is the ultimate, true feeling. Although the nature of sentient beings' feeling is impermanent, one succeeds another without interruption, thus attaining the permanent feeling of the Tathagata. For example, a human bone called "Koushika," the human itself is impermanent, but the bone is permanent and does not change even after thousands of generations. The Buddha-nature of sentient beings is also similar to this. Therefore, it is said that feeling is the Buddha-nature. Some also say that perception is the Buddha-nature. Why? Because through the cause and condition of perception, one correctly attains the perception of the Tathagata. The perception of the Tathagata is the perception without perception. The perception without perception is not to perceive it as sentient beings, not to perceive it as women and men, not to perceive it as form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, not perception, but the cessation of perception. Although the perception of sentient beings is impermanent, perception gradually succeeds one another without interruption, thus attaining the true and permanent perception of the Tathagata. Son of good family, for example,

Furthermore, sentient beings' twelve links of dependent origination are the same as that. Although sentient beings cease, the twelve links of dependent origination are like permanence. The Buddha-nature of sentient beings is also the same as that. Therefore, it is said that perception is the Buddha-nature. Some say that formations are the Buddha-nature. Why is that? Formations are called life. By the cause and condition of life, the Thus-Gone One's life will be obtained to abide forever. Although the life of sentient beings is impermanent, life gradually supports each other and the continuity is not interrupted, so the Thus-Gone One's true and permanent life is obtained. Son of the lineage, for example, listening to the twelve divisions of scripture, and teaching, both are impermanent, but the scripture itself abides forever and does not change, and the Buddha-nature of sentient beings is also the same as that. Therefore, it is said that formations are the Buddha-nature. Some say that consciousness is the Buddha-nature. Why is that? By the cause and condition of consciousness, the Thus-Gone One's equanimity is obtained. Although the consciousness of sentient beings' minds is impermanent, consciousness supports each other and the continuity is not interrupted, so the Thus-Gone One's true and permanent mind will be obtained. For example, fire dyes, although fire is impermanent, dyeing is not impermanent, and the Buddha-nature of sentient beings is also the same as that. The meaning is like that, therefore it is said that consciousness is the Buddha-nature. Some say that: Apart from the aggregates, there is a self, and the self is the Buddha-nature. Why is that? By the cause and condition of the self, the Thus-Gone One's eight powers will be obtained. Some non-Buddhists say that the past, the future, seeing, hearing, sorrow, joy, and speaking are "self." Although these characteristics of "self" are impermanent, the Thus-Gone One's true self is...
