Even if submerged, because of associating with virtuous friends and having faith, that is called emergence. Because of having faith in that way, they uphold, read, recite the twelve categories of scriptures, write and analyze them, and extensively teach them to all sentient beings. They delight in giving and practice wisdom. Because of becoming sharp-witted in that way, faith and wisdom become firm, and there is no mind of turning back. Because there is no turning back in that way, they ascend higher and higher. Ascending higher and higher is a Pratyekabuddha. Although they are liberated themselves in that way, it is not for all sentient beings, so that is called gone, like the five people in the Ganges River. One of them, wanting to cross the great river of samsara, cut off the roots of virtue, so they sank there, but because of associating with virtuous friends, they became endowed with faith. Because of having faith, it is called emergence. Now, without turning back, they ascend higher and higher and reach the depths. Having reached the depths, they stay there and do not leave. Staying there and not leaving is like this: a Bodhisattva contemplates afflictions in order to liberate sentient beings. That is like the sixth person in the Ganges River. One of them, wanting to cross the great river of samsara, cut off the roots of virtue, so they sank there, but because of associating with virtuous friends, they became endowed with faith. Because of having faith, it is called emergence, because of faith, they uphold, read, recite the twelve categories of scriptures, write and analyze them, and extensively teach them to all sentient beings. They delight in giving and practice wisdom. Now the faculties are sharp.

Because of becoming firm in faith and wisdom, there is no mind of turning back. Because there is no turning back, one ascends higher and higher. Because one ascends higher and higher, one reaches the other shore, climbs a high mountain, abandons fearful enemies, and thus experiences much happiness. Son of good family, that which is called reaching the other shore is the Thus-Gone One. That which is called experiencing happiness is the eternal Buddha. That which is called abiding on a high mountain is an example of the great complete nirvana. Son of good family, just as all those people in the Ganges River have hands and feet, but are unable to cross, so too are all sentient beings. Although there are the precious Buddha, the precious Dharma, and the precious Sangha, and the Thus-Gone One has also taught the sutras of the Dharma, the Noble Eightfold Path, and the great complete nirvana, sentient beings are unable to attain them. This is not my fault, nor is it the fault of the Noble Path, but it should be understood that it is the fault of the afflictions and defilements of sentient beings. Therefore, all sentient beings have not attained nirvana. Son of good family, for example, a skilled doctor understands the nature of a disease and prescribes medicine, but if the patient does not take it, it is not the doctor's fault. Son of good family, if a generous benefactor gives all his possessions to everyone, but some do not take them, it is not the benefactor's fault. Son of good family, for example, when the sun rises, all deep ravines are illuminated, but if a blind person does not see the path, it is not the sun's fault. Son of good family, for example, the water of the Ganges River can satisfy many thirsty people. If the thirsty do not drink, it is not the water's fault. Son of good family, for example, the great earth equally produces all fruits without discrimination, but if the farmer does not plow, it is not the earth's fault. Son of good family, the Thus-Gone One extensively explains and teaches the twelve categories of scriptures to pervade all sentient beings, but if sentient beings do not accept them, it is not the Thus-Gone One's fault. Son of good family, whoever cultivates the path will attain the unsurpassed, worthy, perfectly complete enlightenment. Son of good family,

Because you say that all sentient beings possess the Tathagatagarbha, they can attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, just like a magnet attracts iron. This is very good. If you say that only by the power of the cause of the Tathagatagarbha can one attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and there is no need to cultivate the noble path, this is not the case. Son of good family, for example, a person goes to a remote wilderness, and because of thirst, he encounters a well. This well is very deep, and although the water cannot be seen, it is known that there must be water. This person finds a bucket and rope by means, and after drawing water, he can see the water. The Tathagatagarbha is also like this, all sentient beings have it, but it can only be seen by cultivating the undefiled noble path. Son of good family, just as if there is sesame, sesame oil can also be seen. If the methods are abandoned, it cannot be seen, and sugarcane is also the same. Son of good family, for example, the gods of the Thirty-three Heavens, and the northern Kuru Continent, although they have their Dharma, cannot be seen without the power of good deeds or supernatural powers. The roots of grass under the ground and the water under the ground are covered by soil and cannot be seen. The Tathagatagarbha of sentient beings is also like this, and it cannot be seen if the noble path is not cultivated. Son of good family, just as a sick person in the world, if he meets a good doctor, good medicine, and a doctor who is proficient in medical skills, and prescribes medicine according to the disease, or even if he does not meet them, he can recover, son of good family.
