He (referring to the person mentioned earlier) is like the first person in the Ganges River. Evil, lustful sons sink into the three evil realms due to six causes and conditions, unable to escape. What are the six? They are: the burning of unwholesome thoughts, not seeing the afterlife, delighting in practicing afflictions, abandoning roots of virtue, being obscured and severed by unwholesome actions, and relying on unwholesome friends. Furthermore, they sink into the three evil realms due to five things. What are the five? Doing what is unlawful to monks, doing what is unlawful to nuns, presumptuously using the property of the Sangha, doing what is unlawful to mothers, and creating right and wrong in the five disagreements within the Sangha. Furthermore, they fall into the three evil realms due to five things. What are the five? Constantly saying that there are no results of good and non-good, killing sentient beings who have generated the mind of enlightenment, finding fault with those who speak the Dharma, saying that the Dharma is non-Dharma and that non-Dharma is Dharma, and listening to the Dharma in order to find fault with it. Furthermore, they sink into the three evil realms due to three things. What are the three? Saying that the Tathagata is impermanent and ceases, saying that the holy Dharma is also impermanent and changes and transforms, and saying that the Sangha Jewel will cease. Therefore, they constantly sink into the three evil realms. Those below, in order to cross the river of samsara, sink and cannot escape because they have severed the roots of virtue. What is called escape is obtaining faith by relying on a virtuous friend. What is called faith is believing in giving and the results of giving, believing in good and the results of good, believing in non-good and the results of non-good, believing that samsara is suffering, and believing in impermanence and destruction. This is called faith. Because they have faith, they practice pure morality, uphold mindfulness, or read, or recite, or write, or explain and teach, constantly give, and cultivate wisdom, but because their faculties are dull, unwholesome friends

If one encounters "na," they do not cultivate body, discipline, mind, and wisdom, but hold onto wrong views. Furthermore, if one is born in a bad place during a bad time, they will cut off all roots of virtue. Because of cutting off the roots of virtue, they will always sink in samsara. This is like the second person in the Ganges River. One of them wants to cross the great river of samsara, but because of cutting off the roots of virtue, they sink. However, because of relying on a virtuous friend, they are called "arising." The Tathagata is the all-knowing one. He is eternally unchanging. For the sake of sentient beings, he teaches the unsurpassed Dharma. All sentient beings have the Buddha-nature. Believing and trusting that the Tathagata, Dharma, and Sangha are not obstructions. If those with wrong views do not abandon those dharmas, they will never attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. If they abandon them, they will believe that they will surely attain it, and with a mind of faith, they will cultivate pure discipline. Having cultivated pure discipline, they will hold, read, recite the twelve categories of scriptures, write and analyze them, and extensively explain them to all sentient beings. They will delight in giving and cultivate wisdom. Thus, with sharp faculties, faith and wisdom become firm, and without a mind of turning back, that is like the third person in the Ganges River. One of them wants to cross the great river of samsara, but because of cutting off the roots of virtue, they sink there. However, because of relying on a virtuous friend, they have a mind of faith and are called "arising." Because they have a mind of faith, they hold, read, recite the twelve categories of scriptures, write and analyze them, and extensively explain them to all sentient beings. They delight in giving and cultivate wisdom. Thus, because of sharp faculties, relying on faith and wisdom, without a mind of turning back, they look in four directions. That looking in four directions is the four fruits of a renunciate. It is like the fourth person in the Ganges River. One of them wants to cross that great river of samsara, but because of cutting off the roots of virtue, they are there
