If enlightenment can be attained through reliance on Buddha-nature, then what need is there to cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path? World-Honored One, just as this sutra states that if a sick person receives medicine, a doctor, a nurse, and is treated according to their condition, the illness will be cured, so too are all sentient beings. Having heard the Dharma from Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Tathagatas, Bodhisattvas, and virtuous spiritual friends, whether they cultivate the Noble Path or not, whether they encounter it or not, whether they hear it or not, even if they do not cultivate the path, they will attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Why is that? Because they possess Buddha-nature. World-Honored One, just as the sun and moon cannot be prevented from entering Mount Andara, nor can the four great rivers be prevented from flowing into the ocean, nor can those with wrong views be prevented from falling into hell, so too are all sentient beings; no one can prevent them from going to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Why is that? Because they possess Buddha-nature. World-Honored One, therefore, all sentient beings do not need to cultivate the path; by the power of Buddha-nature, they are capable of attaining unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and it is not entirely dependent on the power of cultivating the Noble Eightfold Path. World-Honored One, if it is necessary to cultivate because those with wrong views, those who have broken the four root vows, those who have committed the five heinous crimes, and so on, cannot attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, then it is not correct to say that they attain it through cultivation, since they will definitely attain it through the cause of Buddha-nature. World-Honored One, For example, like a lodestone, although it does not approach iron, it attracts iron by its power. The Buddha-nature of sentient beings is also like that, so there is no need to diligently cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path. The World-Honored One said: Good! Good! Son of good family, for example, on the bank of the Ganges River, seven people are bathing, either because they are afraid of enemies, or because they are entering the water to pick flowers, and one of them sinks as soon as they enter the water. Why is that? Because he is weak and powerless and has not learned to swim.

Therefore. One enters and sinks, but emerges again from sinking. After emerging, they sink again. What is the reason for this? Because of great strength, they emerge from sinking. Because they have not learned to swim, they sink again after emerging. One sinks and then emerges. After emerging, they do not sink again. What is the reason for this? Because the body is heavy, they sink, but because of great strength, they emerge again. Because they have learned to swim, they do not sink again. One enters and sinks. After sinking, they emerge. After emerging, they stop and look in all four directions. What is the reason for this? Because the body is heavy, they sink, but because of great strength, they emerge. Because they have learned to swim, they stop, and because they do not know the place of emergence, they look in all four directions. One enters and sinks. After sinking, they emerge again. After emerging, they stop. After stopping, they look in all four directions. After looking, they leave. What is the reason for this? Because of fear. One enters and leaves. When they reach the bottom, they stop. What is the reason for this? To observe whether the enemy is near or far. One goes to the other shore and climbs a high mountain. Separated from the enemy, they are without fear and become very happy. Son of the lineage, the great river of samsara is also like this, there are seven types of people. They, too, being frightened by the enemy of afflictions, think of crossing the great river of samsara, and thus go forth from home to homelessness. They shave their hair and beard and wear Dharma robes on their bodies. Having gone forth in this way, they associate with unwholesome friends, listen to their words, and hold onto these wrong teachings. The body of sentient beings is the five aggregates, and the five aggregates are the five great elements. If a sentient being dies, the five great elements are permanently severed. If the five great elements are permanently severed, then what is the need to cultivate virtuous and non-virtuous actions? They say this, and therefore they think that there is no virtue and no non-virtue, and no ripening of virtue and non-virtue. Such a person is called a heretic. A person called a heretic is one who cuts off all roots of virtue. Because they have cut off the roots of virtue, they sink in the river of samsara and cannot emerge. What is the reason for this? Because non-virtuous actions are heavy, because there is no strength of faith.
