What does it mean to not cultivate? Not restraining the five senses is not cultivating the body. Not upholding the seven completely pure moral disciplines is not cultivating moral discipline. Not taming the mind is not cultivating the mind. Not practicing the conduct of the noble ones is not cultivating wisdom. Furthermore, not cultivating the body means not possessing the nature of completely pure moral discipline. Not cultivating moral discipline means holding eight kinds of unexamined things. Not cultivating the mind means not being able to cultivate the three characteristics. Not cultivating wisdom means not practicing brahmacharya. Furthermore, not cultivating the body means not contemplating the body, not contemplating form, not contemplating the nature of form, not contemplating the nature of the body, not knowing what arises from the body, not knowing how to go from this body to another, grasping what is not the body as the characteristic of the body, grasping what is not form as the characteristic of form, and then being attached to self, body, and what arises from the body, this is called not cultivating the body. Not cultivating moral discipline means that taking up bad moral disciplines is not called cultivating moral discipline. Holding the moral disciplines of the borderlands, the moral disciplines that benefit oneself, the moral disciplines that tame oneself, and not benefiting all sentient beings, not for the sake of protecting the unsurpassed sacred Dharma, but holding moral discipline in order to be born as a god in the heavens and experience the pleasures of the five desires, this cannot be called cultivating moral discipline. Not cultivating the mind means that when the mind is disturbed and agitated, one cannot single-mindedly protect one's own field of activity. What is called one's own field of activity is the four close placements of mindfulness. What is not one's own field of activity is the five desires. Whoever cannot cultivate the four close placements of mindfulness cannot be called cultivating the mind. Whoever does not protect the mind from non-virtuous actions cannot be called cultivating wisdom. Furthermore, not cultivating the body means not being able to thoroughly realize that this body is impermanent, not abiding, not stable, decaying and ceasing moment by moment, and is the realm of Mara. Not cultivating moral discipline means not possessing the perfection of moral discipline. Not cultivating the mind means not possessing the perfection of meditation. Not cultivating wisdom means not possessing the perfection of wisdom.

and is not endowed with it. Furthermore, not cultivating the body means being attached to the idea that 'this is my body,' 'this belongs to my body,' and 'my body is permanent and unchanging.' Not cultivating discipline means engaging in the ten non-virtuous actions for the sake of one's body. Not cultivating the mind means being unable to restrain the mind from non-virtuous actions. Not cultivating wisdom means being unable to distinguish between virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas because the mind is not restrained. Furthermore, not cultivating the body means not cutting off the view of self. Not cultivating discipline means not cutting off pride in discipline. Not cultivating the mind means engaging in the actions of desire and hatred, and sentient beings go to hell. Furthermore, not cultivating the body means being unable to perceive objects, and even without fault, always holding them as enemies. Son of good family, for example, if an enemy always follows a person and seeks an opportunity, a wise person, having sensed this, is always vigilant with single-pointed attention. If one is not vigilant, one will be harmed by the enemy. Similarly, the body of all sentient beings is the same, and one constantly attends to thirst, food, cold, and heat equally. If one attends to and is vigilant in this way, it will decay and disintegrate. Son of good family, just as a Brahmin who has forgotten the fire deity constantly offers incense and flowers, praises and extols it, and performs prostrations, offerings, and services for a hundred years, if he touches it even for a moment, his hand will be burned. Although he has made offerings to the fire in this way, it does not repay the kindness of the offering even for an instant. All sentient beings are the same. Although they are nourished for many years with incense, flowers, garlands, clothes, food, bedding, and medicine for the cause of illness, if they encounter the causes of internal and external non-virtue, they will perish and cease, and they will not remember even a little the kindness of nourishing them with clothes and food in the past. Son of good family, for example, a king raises four poisonous snakes, puts them in one container, and has a person feed them. If any one of the four poisonous snakes becomes angry, it will kill the person. Fearing this, the person constantly seeks food and feeds them on time. The four great poisonous snakes of all sentient beings are also the same. If
