This noble son is a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, manifested to demonstrate swift maturation in this present time. Noble son, I clearly remember that in a past age, in the land of Betala in the south, in a city called Putana, I was born into a Brahmin family. At that time, there was a king named Kalabu, who was wrathful, cruel, and consumed by arrogance, youthful and radiant, attached to and infatuated with the five desires. At that time, in order to liberate sentient beings, I was practicing yoga outside that city. At that time, the king, in the summer when the flowers were blooming, together with his retinue of consorts and princes, went outside the city to make offerings and enjoy the five desires under the trees. The princes and princesses left the king and went to play, and they came to me. At that time, in order to cut off their desires, I was teaching the Dharma. The king then came after them, and seeing me, he conceived evil thoughts. He asked me, 'Have you attained the fruit of an Arhat?' I said, 'No.' He asked again, 'Have you attained the fruit of a Non-Returner?' I said, 'No.' He asked again, 'If you have not attained these two fruits, and you are still full of desire and affliction, why do you recklessly seduce my maids?' I said, 'Great King, please understand this. Although I have not yet cut off the defilements of desire, my inner mind is truly without desire.' The king said, 'Fool, even ascetics in the world who breathe air and eat fruit will develop desire when they see many beautiful women. You are in your prime, and you have not cut off desire, so how could you not be attached when you see many forms?' I said, 'Great King, seeing forms without attachment does not depend on breathing and eating fruit, but on the power of focusing the mind single-pointedly on impermanence and impurity.' The king said, 'If one slanders and accuses others, can it be called pure morality?' I said, 'Great King, whoever has a mind of jealousy is the one who accuses. If I have no jealousy, why would I accuse?' The king said, 'Venerable one, discipline.'

What is discipline? Great king, patience is discipline. The king said: If patience is discipline, then if you can endure having your ears cut off, I will know that you are practicing discipline. Having said that, he cut off my ears. At that time, my complexion did not change. The king's ministers, seeing such a thing, said to the king: King, this is a venerable sage. The king said to the ministers: How do you know that he is a sage? The ministers replied: Because his complexion did not change when he suffered. The king said again: It is necessary to test whether the complexion will change or not. Having said that, he cut off his nose and all his limbs. At that time, the Bodhisattva, having cultivated love and compassion for countless eons and having generated a compassionate mind for suffering beings, the four protectors became angry and rained down stones and rubble like rain. The king, seeing such a thing, developed a fearful mind, knelt on the ground, and prayed for forgiveness for the sake of compassion. Thus he prayed. I said: Great king, there is neither anger nor desire in my mind. The king said: How can I know that there is no anger in your mind? Then I said: If I am truly without anger, may my body return to its former state. After making this aspiration, the body immediately returned to its former state. This is an example of a Bodhisattva, a great being, manifesting the result in this very life. Son of lineage, just as the result of virtuous actions matures in the future, matures in a later time, so too should one recognize that non-virtuous actions are the same. When a Bodhisattva, a great being, attains unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, the results of all actions will manifestly mature. The evil consequences of non-virtuous actions manifestly mature, such as when a king commits non-virtuous actions, stones and rubble fall from the sky, or a mother bear guides a hunter with gestures, or a hunter sees a deer with fur like the color of a jewel.

English

For example, when a tree is cut down, a hand falls from the tree, this is called the manifest ripening of the fruit of non-virtuous actions. What is future ripening like? For example, a person with wrong views breaks the four root vows and commits the five heinous crimes. What is later ripening like? For example, may those who uphold morality obtain such a body of completely pure morality in the future. If sentient beings can live to be one hundred and eighty years old, may they then become wheel-turning kings and do what benefits sentient beings, this is a prayer. Noble son, if all actions were certain to ripen manifestly in the present, then there would be no future ripening or later ripening. The actions of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva meditating on the thirty-two marks of a great being will not ripen manifestly in the present; those actions whose ripening does not become threefold are called uncertain. Noble son, if someone says that all actions are certain to ripen, then there would be no pure conduct, liberation, or nirvana; know that such a person is not my attendant, but a retinue of Mara. So, which actions are certain and uncertain? Certainty is called present ripening, future ripening, and later ripening. Uncertainty means that one will experience it when encountering conditions, and will not experience it when not encountering conditions; saying this means that there is pure conduct, liberation, and nirvana. Therefore, that is my true attendant, not a retinue of Mara. Noble son, for all sentient beings, the path of uncertainty is many, and the path of certainty is few, therefore there is diligence in the path. Because there is diligence in the path, even certainly heavy actions will become light, and the uncertain path will not be experienced in the future. Noble son, there are two types of people, which two? That is, making the uncertain become certain ripening, making the present ripening ripen in the future, and making light ripening become heavy ripening.
