O son of good family, all actions performed have both light and heavy consequences. These two types of actions, light and heavy, each have two aspects: what are they? They are definite and indefinite. O son of good family, some say that there are no consequences for unwholesome actions. If the consequences of unwholesome actions are definitely experienced, then why is it that someone of low birth who takes life is born as a god in the heavens and attains the fruit of liberation with finger rings? Therefore, there are those who say that having performed an action, one definitely experiences the result, and one definitely does not experience the result. To cut off this evil view, it is said in the sutras: There is no action that is performed without experiencing its result. O son of good family, a heavy action can also be transformed into a light action, and a light action can also be transformed into a heavy action. However, this is not the case for all beings, but a distinction is made between the foolish and the wise. Therefore, not all actions definitely result in consequences; although they are not definite, they are also not without consequences. O son of good family, all sentient beings are of two types: the wise and the ignorant. Among them, the wise, through the power of wisdom, even if they have committed extremely heavy actions that would lead to the hell realms, will experience only a light result in this life and be liberated. The ignorant, through the light actions of this life, will experience the heavy results of actions that would lead to the hell realms. Simhanada Bodhisattva asked: Blessed One, if that is the case, then the pure practice of celibacy and the fruit of liberation should not be cultivated. The Blessed One replied: O son of good family, if all actions definitely result in consequences, then it could be said that celibacy and liberation are not necessary, but because it is not definite, one should cultivate the fruit for the sake of celibacy and liberation. O son of good family, if all unwholesome actions are abandoned, then the fruit of wholesome actions will be attained. If wholesome actions are abandoned, then they will turn into the fruit of unwholesome actions. If all actions definitely result in consequences, then it would not be necessary to cultivate the noble path. If the noble path is not cultivated, then one will not be liberated. Therefore, the noble ones should destroy definite actions and lighten their ripening, and the ripening of indefinite actions should not

Therefore, one cultivates the path in order to attain liberation. If all actions necessarily yield results, then the noble path would be unnecessary, because apart from abandoning the cultivation of the noble path, there is no other place to attain liberation. It is also unreasonable to say that one attains nirvana without attaining liberation. Son of good family, if all actions necessarily yield results, then one who only performs virtuous actions in one lifetime will always experience happiness, and one who performs heavy non-virtuous actions in one lifetime will always experience great suffering. If the result of actions is like that, then there is no need to cultivate the path, and there is no need for liberation and nirvana, and people will always be of the human caste, and Brahmins will always be of the Brahmin caste. If that is the case, then there would be no bad castes and no bad people, and people would always be human, and Brahmins would always be Brahmins, and actions done in childhood should be experienced from childhood, and there is no reason to experience them in adulthood or old age. Those who commit non-virtuous deeds in old age and fall into hell should not experience them with their bodies immediately after being born in hell, but should experience them only after they are old. If one does not cut off life in old age, then one should not experience it in adulthood, and if one does not experience it in adulthood, then how will one experience it in old age? Because that action has not disappeared. If the action has not disappeared, then the cultivation of the path and nirvana will not exist. Son of good family, there are two kinds of actions: definite and indefinite. There are also two kinds of definite actions: definitely ripened and definitely timed. Some are definitely ripened but indefinitely timed, and will be experienced when they meet with conditions. Some are experienced in three times, such as experiencing now, experiencing in the future, and experiencing later. Son of good family, if one does virtuous and non-virtuous actions with a definite mind, and after doing them, generates great faith and is very happy, and vows to always make offerings to the Three Jewels, then this is a definite action. Son of good family, the roots of virtue of the wise are deep and firm, and should be waited for.

Even heavy karma becomes light due to difficulties. The ignorant, due to the depth and density of their non-virtue, even light karma ripens into heaviness. Therefore, it should not be said that all karma is definite. Bodhisattvas, great beings, although they have no karma of sentient beings in hell, make aspirations to be born in the hells for the sake of sentient beings. Son of good family, in the past, when sentient beings lived to be a hundred years old, I saw as many sentient beings as grains of sand in the Ganges River suffering in hell, and I generated a great vow, taking the body of a sentient being in hell. Although Bodhisattvas do not truly have such karma at that time, they take the ripening of sentient beings in hell for the sake of sentient beings. At that time, in the hells of sentient beings, for countless years, I extensively explained and taught the twelve categories of scriptures to the sinful ones. Having heard this, they destroyed the ripening of non-virtue, and the hells of sentient beings were emptied, except for those with wrong views. This is said to be that Bodhisattvas, great beings, do not experience non-virtuous karma in the present, future, or later. Furthermore, son of good family, in this Fortunate Aeon, countless sentient beings are born in the animal realm, experiencing the fruits of non-virtuous karma. Having seen this, I again generated a great vow, and in order to teach the Dharma to and liberate those sentient beings, I experienced bodies as various as khasha, deer, bear, pigeon, monkey, nāga, snake, garuda, fish, turtle, fox, rabbit, cow, horse, and so forth. Son of good family, although Bodhisattvas, great beings, do not have such bad karma of animals, by the power of their great vows, they also take those bodies for the sake of sentient beings. This is said to be that Bodhisattvas, great beings, do not experience non-virtuous karma in the present, future, or later. Furthermore, son of good family, in this Fortunate Aeon, countless immeasurable sentient beings are born as pretas, eating vomit, fat, meat, pus, blood, feces, urine, saliva, and mucus,
