The samadhi of entering the stream, the samadhi of once-returning, the samadhi of non-returning, the samadhi of an Arhat, the samadhi of a Pratyekabuddha, the samadhi of a Bodhisattva, and the samadhi of the Tathagata's omniscience. Again, there are eight types, namely the eight liberations. These are: the samadhi of liberation by contemplating form with form, the samadhi of liberation by contemplating external forms without the notion of internal form, the samadhi attained by the body, the samadhi of liberation of the sphere of infinite space, the samadhi of liberation of the sphere of infinite consciousness, the samadhi of liberation of the sphere of nothingness, the samadhi of liberation of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and the samadhi of liberation of cessation. Again, there are nine types, the nine successive attainments, namely the four dhyanas, the four formless attainments, and the samadhi of cessation. Again, there are ten types, namely the ten types: the samadhi of all earth, the samadhi of all water, the samadhi of all fire, the samadhi of all wind, the samadhi of all blue, the samadhi of all yellow, the samadhi of all red, the samadhi of all white, the samadhi of infinite space, the samadhi of infinite consciousness, and the samadhi of nothingness. Furthermore, there are countless others, such as Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Noble son, these are called the characteristics of samadhi. Noble son, wisdom has two aspects: mundane and supramundane. Again, there are three aspects: wisdom, vipassana (insight), and prajna (transcendental wisdom). What is called wisdom refers to all sentient beings. What is called vipassana refers to all noble ones. What is called prajna refers to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Furthermore, wisdom is the characteristic of distinction, vipassana is the characteristic of generality, and prajna is the complete destruction of characteristics.

We are fourfold, namely these four noble truths. Son of lineage, cultivate calm abiding for the sake of three things. What are the three? In order to be without negligence, for the arrangement of great wisdom, and in order to obtain mastery. Furthermore, cultivate insight for the sake of three things, what are the three? In order to contemplate the maturation of the non-virtuous results of samsara, in order to cause the roots of virtue to arise and increase, and in order to destroy all afflictions. Lion's Roar asked: Blessed One, as it is said in the sutras, if insight can destroy afflictions, then what is the need to cultivate calm abiding? The Blessed One replied: Son of lineage, you say that insight can destroy afflictions, but that is not the case. Why is that? Because when there is wisdom, there are no afflictions, and when there are afflictions, there is no wisdom, so why do you say that insight can destroy afflictions? Son of lineage, for example, when there is light, there is no darkness, and when there is darkness, there is no light, who would say that light can dispel darkness? Such a situation does not exist. Son of lineage, what is wisdom? What are afflictions? To say that wisdom can dispel afflictions. Since it is not like that, there is nothing to destroy. Son of lineage, saying that wisdom can destroy afflictions, is it destroyed after arriving, or destroyed before arriving? If it is destroyed before arriving, then even foolish ordinary people should be able to destroy it. But if it is destroyed after arriving, then the previous moment should have already destroyed it. If the previous moment does not destroy it, then the later moment will not destroy it either. If the previous moment destroys it as soon as it arrives, then it itself is not yet arrived, why do you say that wisdom can destroy it? If you say that it is destroyed by arriving and not arriving together, then that is also not the case. Furthermore, saying that insight can destroy afflictions, is it able to destroy alone? Or will it be destroyed with help? If it is able to destroy alone, then why would a Bodhisattva cultivate the eightfold noble path? If it is with help,

If something is destroyed by something else, then know that it is not destroyed by a single thing. If a single thing cannot destroy it, then friends cannot destroy it either. Just as one blind person cannot see forms, even if many blind people help each other, they cannot see forms. Similarly, vipassanā (insight) is also like that. Son of good family, just as the nature of earth is hardness, the nature of water is wetness, the nature of fire is warmth, and the nature of wind is movement. Like that, from the nature of earth being hardness to the nature of wind being movement, it is not done by causes and conditions, but its nature is like that. Just as the afflictions of the four great elements (earth, water, fire, wind) are also the same, they are determined by their nature. If it is determined like that, then why should wisdom cut it off? Therefore, it is said that vipassanā definitely cannot destroy the afflictions. Son of good family, for example, the nature of salt is salty, and it also makes other things different from it salty; the nature of honey is sweet, and it also makes other things different from it sweet; the nature of water is wet, and it also makes other things different from it wet. Similarly, because wisdom is the prevention of characteristics, it prevents dharma, saying this is not so. Why is that? If there is no prevention in dharma, then how can wisdom strongly prevent it? Just as the saltiness of salt makes other things different from it salty, the prevention of wisdom is also the same, preventing different dharmas, saying this is also not so. Why is that? The nature of wisdom is to prevent moment by moment. If it prevents moment by moment, then why do you say it prevents different dharmas? Therefore, the nature of wisdom will not destroy the afflictions. Son of good family, there are two kinds of prevention for all dharmas, namely, prevention by nature and ultimate prevention. If it is prevention by nature like that, then why should wisdom prevent it? If you say that wisdom can burn afflictions, just as fire burns matter, saying this is also not so. Why is that? Fire burns matter, and at least ashes remain. If wisdom is also the same, then something like ashes will remain. An axe cuts a tree
