Because no one can see it, it is said to be completely extinguished. Simhanada Bodhisattva asked: Why does the Tathagata enter the deep cave of samadhi? The Buddha replied: Son of good family, for the sake of saving all sentient beings, for the sake of generating ungenerated roots of virtue, for the sake of increasing and expanding the generated roots of virtue, for the sake of maturing the immature good fruits, for the sake of leading the matured good fruits into unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, for the sake of generating reverence for the matured good Dharma, for the sake of separating the negligent from negligence, for the sake of speaking the Dharma like Manjushri and other great elephants with fragrant hair, for the sake of making those who like to read and recite have great joy in samadhi, for the sake of subduing sentient beings with the conduct of the noble, the conduct of Brahma, and the conduct of the gods, for the sake of observing the profound essence of the unmixed Dharma, for the sake of rebuking the negligent attendants. Even the Tathagata is always peaceful and delights in samadhi, do you, whose afflictions are not exhausted, want to generate negligence? For the sake of rebuking the evil nuns who hold eight kinds of unexamined objects, have many desires, and do not know satisfaction. For the sake of making sentient beings generate reverence for those who hear the Dharma such as samadhi. Because of such causes and conditions, they enter the deep cave of samadhi. Simhanada Bodhisattva asked: World Honored One, the samadhi without characteristics is called the great Nirvana, is it for that reason that it is called Nirvana without characteristics? Or why is it called without characteristics? The World Honored One replied: Son of good family, because there are no ten characteristics, what are the ten? For example: the characteristic of form, the characteristic of sound, the characteristic of taste, the characteristic of smell, the characteristic of touch, the characteristic of male, the characteristic of dwelling, the characteristic of destruction, the characteristic of birth, and the characteristic of female, these ten. Like this, without characteristics, it is called without characteristics. Son of good family, if one is attached to characteristics, ignorance will arise, and because of ignorance, craving will arise.

Due to attachment, bondage arises. Due to bondage, birth is taken. Due to birth, there will be death. Due to death, it is impermanent. Not being attached to characteristics, ignorance does not arise. Because ignorance does not arise, there is no craving. Because there is no craving, there is no bondage. Because there is no bondage, birth is not taken. Because birth is not taken, there is no death. Because there is no death, it is called permanence. Therefore, Nirvana is permanent. Lion's Roar asked: World Honored One, what kind of monks can cut off those ten characteristics? The World Honored One said: Son of good family, if a monk repeatedly cultivates the three characteristics, he will cut off the ten characteristics. That is, repeatedly cultivating the characteristic of samadhi, repeatedly cultivating the characteristic of wisdom, and sometimes repeatedly cultivating the characteristic of equanimity, these are called the three characteristics. Lion's Roar asked: World Honored One, what are the characteristics of samadhi, wisdom, and equanimity? If the characteristic of samadhi is called samadhi, then all sentient beings with minds also have samadhi, why is it said to cultivate samadhi? If focusing the mind on one object is called samadhi, if focusing on other objects is called not samadhi, if one has not entered samadhi, is one not omniscient? If one is not omniscient, why is it called samadhi? If one action obtains samadhi, other actions are not samadhi. If it is not samadhi, then one is not omniscient. If one is not omniscient, why is it called samadhi? Similarly, the two characteristics of wisdom and equanimity are the same. The World Honored One said: Son of good family, as you said, focusing on one object is called samadhi, focusing on other objects is not samadhi, that is not the meaning. Why? Other focus is also one object, and creation is the same. Also, sentient beings originally have
