Thinking that having samadhi means there is no need to practice, that is not the case. Why is that? Because the so-called samadhi refers to virtuous samadhi. If all sentient beings do not truly possess it, why would it be said that there is no need to practice? Therefore, abiding in virtuous samadhi, contemplating all dharmas, this is called the characteristic of virtuous wisdom. Not seeing the characteristics of samadhi and wisdom as different is called the characteristic of equanimity. Furthermore, son of good family, if one grasps the characteristic of form, and does not contemplate whether form is permanent or impermanent, this is called samadhi. Contemplating the characteristics of permanence and impermanence in form is called the characteristic of wisdom. Contemplating all dharmas with samadhi and wisdom equally is called the characteristic of equanimity. Son of good family, for example, a well-adjusted chariot travels at a moderate speed. Moderate speed is called the characteristic of equanimity. Bodhisattvas are also like this; if the element of samadhi is greater, then wisdom should be cultivated. If the element of wisdom is greater, then samadhi should be cultivated. When the elements of samadhi and wisdom are equal, this is called equanimity. Son of good family, the tenth-level bodhisattva has a greater strength of wisdom and a lesser strength of samadhi, therefore they do not clearly see the Buddha-nature. Hearers and solitary realizers have a greater strength of samadhi and a lesser element of wisdom, therefore they do not see the Buddha-nature. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have equal elements of samadhi and wisdom, therefore they clearly see the Buddha-nature, just like placing an amalaka fruit in the palm of the hand. Seeing the Buddha-nature is called the characteristic of equanimity. The so-called śamatha (止) is restraint, because it restrains all afflictions. Furthermore, śamatha is also called taming, because it tames unwholesome faculties. Furthermore, śamatha is also called peace, because it makes the three doors of body, speech, and mind peaceful. Furthermore, śamatha is also called complete abandonment, because it makes sentient beings completely abandon the five desires. Furthermore, śamatha is purification.

, which is said to be for subduing desire, hatred, and ignorance. Therefore, it is called the characteristic of samadhi. Vipassana, also known as seeing things as they are, is also known as direct seeing, also known as being able to see, also known as seeing comprehensively, also known as seeing sequentially, also known as seeing the differences in the characteristics of phenomena, which is wisdom. Equanimity is also known as equality, also known as non-contention, also known as non-discrimination, also known as non-action, which is equanimity. Son of good family, there are two types of shamatha-vipassana: worldly and transcendental. There are also two types: accomplished and unaccomplished. Among them, the accomplished are Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The unaccomplished are Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, etc. There are also three types: inferior, middling, and superior. Among them, the inferior are the base ones. The middling are Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. The superior are Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. There are also four types: wrong, abiding, increasingly increasing, and being able to do beneficial things. There are also five types: the samadhi of the five wisdoms. What are the five? The samadhi without food, the samadhi without faults, the one-pointed samadhi with completely pure body and mind, the samadhi with happiness in both cause and effect, and the samadhi of constant mindfulness. There are also six types: the samadhi of contemplating skeletons, the samadhi of loving-kindness, the samadhi of contemplating the twelve links of dependent origination, the samadhi of counting breaths, the samadhi of following after conceptualization, and the samadhi of contemplating birth and cessation. There are also seven types, namely the seven branches of enlightenment: mindfulness as a branch of enlightenment, discrimination of dharmas as a branch of enlightenment, diligence as a branch of enlightenment, joy as a branch of enlightenment, serenity as a branch of enlightenment, samadhi as a branch of enlightenment, and equanimity as a branch of enlightenment. There are also seven types, namely cause.
