No. Why is that? The body is limitless, without a net of doubt. Because it does not act or take, it is called permanent. Because it does not arise or cease, it is called bliss. Because it is without the stain of afflictions, it is called completely pure. Because it does not have ten characteristics, it is called emptiness. Therefore, the Tathagata is permanent, blissful, self, completely pure, empty, and without characteristics. The non-Buddhists asked: If the Tathagata is permanent, blissful, self, completely pure, and without characteristics, then look, the Dharma spoken by Gautama is also not emptiness, therefore we take it with our heads and hold it. After asking this, at that time, countless non-Buddhists renounced with faith in the Buddha's teachings. Son of good family, because of that cause, that reason, I roared a great lion's roar under this Sala tree. The very act of roaring a lion's roar is called Nirvana. Son of good family, one pair of Sala trees in the east, having destroyed impermanence, causes the attainment of permanence, up to one pair of trees in the north, having destroyed impurity, causes the attainment of complete purity. Son of good family, the sentient beings dwelling here protect the Sala grove for the sake of the Sala trees, just as they do not allow outsiders to break branches and leaves, etc., so too am I, for the sake of the four Dharmas, I have caused my attendants to protect the Buddha's Dharma. What are the four? Permanent, blissful, self, and completely pure. These four pairs of trees are protected by four kings, because the four kings should protect and uphold my Dharma, therefore I completely pass into Nirvana here. Son of good family, the flowers and fruits of the Sala tree always flourish, and always benefit countless sentient beings. I also benefit the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas in the same way. Among them, the flower is my metaphor, the fruit is the metaphor for bliss, therefore I enter into the Samadhi of complete pacification here among the Sala trees. The Samadhi called complete pacification is the Great Nirvana. Color

I, Lion's Roar, asked (Bodhisattva Lion's Roar asked). World Honored One, for what reason does the World Honored One enter Nirvana in the middle month of spring? Son of good family, the middle month of spring is called spring. In the month of spring, all things grow, and all cultivation has taken root. Flowers and fruits are in full bloom, all rivers are full, and all animals have full breasts. At this time, sentient beings often give rise to thoughts of permanence. In order to destroy the permanent minds of sentient beings, it is shown that all dharmas are impermanent, and only the Tathagata shows permanence and immutability. Son of good family, among the six seasons, early winter is when everything is withered and everyone is unhappy. Summer is oily, so everyone is happy and attached. In order to destroy sentient beings' attachment to worldly happiness, permanence, happiness, self, and purity are spoken of. The Tathagata is also like this. In order to destroy the self of the world and the purity of the world, the Tathagata is said to be the true self and true purity. Among them, the so-called middle month of spring is a metaphor for the two aspects of the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata. The so-called displeasure of winter is a metaphor for the wise not liking the Tathagata's impermanence and entering Nirvana. The so-called joy of summer is a metaphor for the wise believing in the Tathagata's permanence, happiness, self, and purity. The so-called cultivation is a metaphor for all sentient beings hearing the Dharma and rejoicing, and generating roots of virtue in unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. The so-called rivers are a metaphor for the great Bodhisattvas of the ten directions coming before me to ask about and uphold this Great Nirvana Sutra. The so-called full breasts of all animals are a metaphor for my attendants generating roots of virtue. The so-called flowers are a metaphor for the seven branches of enlightenment. The so-called fruits are a metaphor for the four fruits. For this reason, I enter Nirvana in the middle month of spring. Lion's Roar asked, from the Tathagata's initial birth, renunciation, attainment of enlightenment, to the turning of the wheel of Dharma,

If it is related to the eighth day, why is only nirvana related to the fifteenth? The Blessed One said: Good, good! Son of good family, just as the moon on the fifteenth has no increase or decrease, so too is the Tathagata, the Blessed One; there is no increase or decrease in entering nirvana. Therefore, one enters nirvana on the fifteenth. Son of good family, on the night of the fifteenth, when the moon is full, it accomplishes eleven things. What are the eleven? It dispels darkness. It enables beings to see the path and the non-path. It enables beings to see the right path and the wrong path. It eliminates the suffering of heat and obtains the bliss of coolness. It subdues the arrogant mind of the firefly. It pacifies the mind of all-encompassing consciousness. It eliminates the fear of beings frightened by angry beasts. It opens the Utpala flower. It closes the lotus flower. It causes travelers to generate the mind to enter the path. Beings enjoy the five desires and experience much happiness. Son of good family, the full moon of the Tathagata is also like that: it destroys the great darkness of ignorance, indicates the right path and the wrong path, sees the dangers of the path of samsara, reveals and indicates the bliss of the path of nirvana, abandons the torment of attachment, hatred, and delusion, destroys the ignorance of the heretics, destroys the thieves of all afflictions, eliminates the mind obscured by the five fears, opens the mind of beings to generate roots of virtue, covers the minds of beings with the five desires, exhorts beings to enter the great nirvana, and makes beings believe in practicing liberation. Therefore, one enters nirvana on the fifteenth, but in truth, one has not entered nirvana. My foolish and wicked attendants think that the Tathagata has entered nirvana, just as a woman has many sons, and the mother separates from her sons and goes to another place; until the mother returns, the sons each...
