Refutation. Some say there is permanence, some say there is suffering, some say there is happiness, some say there is self, some say there is no self, some say there is complete purity, some say there is no complete purity, some say there is existence, some say there is non-existence, but those are not true, so they are called illusion. Just as a fruit is obtained from the cause of a seed, so too is the ascetic Gautama, who was born from a goddess. If the mother herself is an illusion, how could the son not be so? The ascetic Gautama does not truly know or see. If the Brahmins practice austerities and keep vows for many years, yet do not have true knowledge and vision, how can Gautama, who is young and has studied for a short time and has not practiced austerities, have true knowledge and vision? If one practices austerities for seven years and does not have many views, what need is there to mention less than six years? Foolish and ignorant people believe what he says. Just as a great magician deceives fools, so too is the ascetic Gautama. Son of good family, in this way, those six teachers greatly increase the beings' view of evil in this city. Son of good family, having seen those things, with great compassion, I gathered all the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas of the ten directions, filling this garden with forty yojanas, and today I roar the great lion's roar here. Son of good family, speaking much in an empty place is not called roaring the lion's roar, but proclaiming it in the midst of a large assembly of learned and wise people is called roaring the great lion's roar. To roar the lion's roar is not to say that all dharmas are impermanent, suffering, selfless, and completely impure, but only to proclaim that the Tathagata is permanent, blissful, self, and completely pure. Then the six teachers said again: If Gautama has a self, then we also have a self, and the so-called self refers to seeing. Gautama, just as one can see things through a window, so too am I, and seeing is like an eye. Can

After saying, "I am like what I see," the Blessed One addressed the six teachers: The statement that whatever is seen is called "I" is not so. Why is that? Because in the analogy you give, things can be seen through a gap. If someone looks through a single gap, then all six senses will operate. If there truly is an "I" and seeing occurs through the condition of the eye, then why doesn't one sense perceive all six realms, just like a gap? If one sense cannot see six realms at once, then it is evident that there is no "I." The example of a gap is that even if one looks for a hundred years, what is seen is no different. If the faculty of the eye were also like that, even if it aged and the faculty deteriorated, there should be no difference. The eye and the gap are different, therefore one sees the inside and the outside. If the faculty of the eye were like that, it should be able to see the inside and the outside simultaneously. If one cannot see, can one say there is an "I"? The six teachers said: Gautama, if there is no "I," then who is seeing? The Blessed One said: Form, appearance, mind, and eye, etc., these four combined are called "seeing." But in reality, there is no seer or receiver. Sentient beings, being inverted, say there is a seer and receiver. In fact, all sentient beings see things in an inverted way. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas see things as they truly are. The six teachers said: If you say that form is "I," that is also incorrect. Why is that? Because form is not truly "I." If form were "I," then since there would be no ugly forms, why would there be differences in the four castes? Why wouldn't it become a single Brahmin caste? Why is it subject to others, without autonomy, with deteriorated and incomplete faculties? Why doesn't it take the body of a god, but instead takes various bodies of hell beings, animals, and hungry ghosts, etc.? From this, it is evident that form cannot change as one wishes, therefore it can be said with certainty that there is no "I." Because there is no "I," it is called impermanent. Because it is impermanent, it is suffering. Because it is suffering, it is emptiness. Because it is emptiness, it is inverted.
