May all attain the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Having made this aspiration and meditating in this way, one does not look at wisdom, does not look at the characteristics of wisdom, does not look at meditation, and does not look at the ripening of the fruit. Meditating in this way is called fully meditating on wisdom. Son of good family, thus practicing discipline, samadhi, and wisdom is called a Bodhisattva. Thus, one who cannot practice discipline, samadhi, and wisdom is called a Shravaka. The thirty-ninth chapter. Furthermore, son of good family, how is discipline practiced? That which can destroy the sixteen evil deeds of all sentient beings is called practicing discipline. What are the sixteen? They are as follows: raising lambs for profit and selling them to others after they are grown; buying and killing them for profit; raising piglets for profit and selling them to others after they are grown; buying and killing them for profit; raising calves for profit and selling them after they are grown; buying and killing them for profit; raising birds for profit and selling them after they are grown; buying and killing them for profit; catching fish; hunting; stealing; being a butcher; catching birds; sowing discord; being a gatekeeper for a king; and cursing nagas with mantras. Cutting off these sixteen kinds of evil deeds of sentient beings is called practicing discipline. Furthermore, how is samadhi practiced? Cutting off all worldly samadhis, such as the formless samadhi, which causes sentient beings to generate a perverse mind, thinking that they have passed beyond suffering; and the samadhi of the mind of the boundless world; and the samadhi of the aggregates of the pure world; and the samadhi of the end of the world; and the samadhi of the cessation of the world; and the samadhi of the nature of the world; and the samadhi of the person of the world; and the samadhi of neither perception nor non-perception. Such samadhis cause sentient beings to generate a perverse mind, thinking that they have passed beyond suffering. Cutting off these samadhis is samadhi.

It is called completely cultivating Bodhi. Furthermore, how does one cultivate wisdom? It means destroying all the evil views of the world. All sentient beings have evil views. For example: Form is self, and also what belongs to self. I exist in form, and form exists in me, and so on up to consciousness. Permanence is self. Even if form ceases, I still exist. Form itself is self. If form ceases, then self also ceases, they say. And some say that the maker is self, and feeling is form. And some say that the maker is form, and feeling is self. And some say that there is no maker, and no feeling. It arises and ceases by itself, not from causes and conditions. And some say that there is no maker, and no feeling. Everything is made by what is called the Lord of Power. And some say that there is no maker and no feeling, everything is made by time. And some say that there is neither maker nor feeling, the five great elements such as earth are called sentient beings. Son of good family, destroying those evil views of all sentient beings is called cultivating wisdom. Son of good family, cultivating morality will pacify the body. Cultivating samadhi will pacify the mind. Cultivating wisdom will destroy the mind of doubt. By destroying the mind of doubt, one will completely cultivate Bodhi. By cultivating Bodhi, one will see the Buddha-nature. By seeing the Buddha-nature, one will attain unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. By attaining unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, one will attain the unsurpassed great Nirvana. By attaining great Nirvana, one will cut off all the cyclic afflictions of all sentient beings, all existence, all realms, and all happiness. By cutting off from cyclic existence to cutting off happiness, one will attain the Dharma of permanence, bliss, self, and purity. Simhanada Bodhisattva asked: Bhagavan, as the Bhagavan said, if it is unborn and unceasing,

If it is called the Great Nirvana, then birth is also like that, neither arising nor ceasing, why is it not called Nirvana? Son of good family, it is just so. It is just so, as you have said, birth is neither arising nor ceasing, but it has no beginning and no end. Reporting (to the Blessed One): Blessed One, the dharma of samsara also has no beginning and no end. If it has neither beginning nor end, then it becomes permanent. If it is permanent, then it is Nirvana, why is samsara not called Nirvana? Son of good family, the dharma of samsara has cause and effect, because it has cause and effect, it cannot be called Nirvana. Why is that? Because the nature of Nirvana has no cause and effect. Lion's Roar reported (to the Blessed One): Blessed One, Nirvana is also as the Blessed One said in verses, it has cause and effect. For example: from cause arises rebirth in the heavenly realms, from cause one falls into the evil realms, from cause one obtains Nirvana, therefore everything has a cause. You have also said this. Furthermore, the Blessed One previously instructed the monks: I will explain the path and fruit of practice. Practice refers to the complete practice of discipline, concentration, and wisdom. The path is like this: the Noble Eightfold Path. The fruit of practice is like this: Nirvana. You have said this, Blessed One, is Nirvana not a fruit? Why do you say that the nature of Nirvana has no cause and effect? The Blessed One instructed: Son of good family, I said that the cause of Nirvana is like this: Buddha-nature. Buddha-nature does not produce Nirvana, therefore I said that Nirvana is without cause. Because it destroys afflictions, it is called the Great Fruit. Because it is not produced from the path, it is called without fruit. Therefore, Nirvana is without cause and without fruit. Lion's Roar reported (to the Blessed One): Blessed One, the Buddha-nature of sentient beings, all...
