of mind. Such minds arise and cease momentarily, but similar minds follow one another continuously, so it is called accumulating the accumulation of enlightenment. Lion's Roar asked: World Honored One, such dharmas cease momentarily. Since they cease momentarily, and a similar stream follows one another continuously, how can one accumulate accumulations? The World Honored One said: Son of good family, just as a lamp ceases momentarily, but it can dispel darkness with light, so it is with the dharmas of mindfulness and so on. Son of good family, just as the food of sentient beings also ceases momentarily, but it can satisfy the hungry. For example, excellent medicine also ceases momentarily, but it can cure diseases. The light of the sun and moon also ceases momentarily, but it can grow all plants and forests. Son of good family, you say that it ceases momentarily, how can it arise? This is because the mind is not interrupted, so it is called arising. Son of good family, just as reciters cannot recite all the words at once, the previous words cannot go to the middle, and the middle words cannot go to the end, names and letters, and mind and, perception also cease momentarily, but because of long-term habit, one can fully understand. Son of good family, for example, a goldsmith who learns from the beginning to old age, the things he does also cease momentarily, but there is no confusion between before and after. Because of long practice, the work becomes more and more skilled, so he is called a skilled goldsmith, and reading and reciting are the same. Son of good family, for example, the earth does not say to the seed, "You sprout," but because of the nature of dharma, the sprout grows naturally. Until the flower, it does not say, "You bear fruit," but because of the nature of dharma, the fruit grows naturally. It is the same with sentient beings accumulating the accumulation of enlightenment. Son of good family, for example, the method of counting is, one

One does not become two, and two does not become three. Although they cease momentarily, just as one travels between a thousand and ten thousand, so too are the accumulations of enlightenment and so forth for sentient beings. Son of good family, for example, a flame ceases momentarily, but the flame that ceased before does not say to the later flame, 'I have ceased, may you arise and dispel the darkness.' Son of good family, for example, a calf sucks milk as soon as it is born, and no one teaches it how to suck milk. Although it ceases momentarily, it changes from being hungry at first to being full later. Therefore, one should recognize the similarity of the lineage. If it is similar, just as beings are born into different species, so too are the accumulations of enlightenment and so forth for sentient beings. Although it is not that it increases from the beginning, all afflictions will be destroyed through long practice. Lion's Roar asked: World Honored One, as the World Honored One has said, those who have attained the fruit of stream-entry, even if born in a bad place, will uphold morality, not kill, not steal, not commit adultery, not speak divisive or harsh words, and not drink alcohol. Just as the aggregates of a stream-enterer cease in this place and do not go to a bad place, so too are the accumulations of enlightenment and so forth, they do not go to a bad place. If it is indeed so, why are they not born in a pure land? If the aggregates of a bad place are not the aggregates of a stream-enterer, why do they not commit evil deeds? The World Honored One replied: Son of good family, even if a stream-enterer is born in a bad place, they do not lose the name of stream-enterer, because the aggregates are different, that is why I gave the example of the calf. Although a stream-enterer is born in a bad place, they do not commit evil deeds because of the power of enlightenment. Son of good family, for example, because the king of lions dwells on a fragrant sandalwood mountain, all the flying birds and beasts running on the ground do not run to that mountain, because they cannot bear its proximity. If the king of lions goes to a snowy mountain, all the flying birds and beasts also cannot bear its proximity, and do not approach.
