What is abandonment? By abandoning what does one attain happiness? By the complete attainment of happiness, what is the complete attainment of samadhi? By the complete attainment of samadhi, what is the complete attainment of right knowledge and vision? By the complete attainment of right knowledge and vision, what is the complete attainment of weariness? By the complete attainment of weariness, what is the complete attainment of utter revulsion? By the complete attainment of utter revulsion, what is the complete attainment of liberation? By the complete attainment of liberation, what is nirvana? This is an example of progression. How then is it an example of reversal? The outer limit of the ocean is like this: a great river. The outer limit of a great river is like this: a small river. The outer limit of a small river is like this: a great lake. The outer limit of a great lake is like this: a small lake. The outer limit of a small lake is like this: a great spring. The outer limit of a great spring is like this: a small spring. The outer limit of a small spring is like this: a great ravine. The outer limit of a great ravine is like this: a small ravine. The outer limit of a small ravine is like this: a great puddle. The outer limit of a great puddle is like this: a great rain. The outer limit of nirvana is like this: liberation. The outer limit of liberation is like this: utter revulsion. The outer limit of utter revulsion is like this: weariness. The outer limit of weariness is like this: right knowledge and vision. The outer limit of right knowledge and vision is like this: samadhi. The outer limit of samadhi is like this: happiness. The outer limit of happiness is like this: complete abandonment. The outer limit of complete abandonment is like this: a joyful mind. The outer limit of a joyful mind is like this: non-regret. The outer limit of non-regret is like this: upholding morality. The outer limit of upholding morality is like this: a rain of dharma. This is an example of reversal. How then is it an example of direct perception? As it is said in the sutras, the nature of the minds of sentient beings is like a monkey. The nature of a monkey is to let go of one thing and take another. The nature of sentient beings is also the same: form and sound.

And, smell, taste, touch, and dharma, there is no time to stop for a moment because of attachment, so it was said. This is an obvious example. So, what is an invalid example? Like this, I once said to King Army Extremely Victorious: Great King, very close and trustworthy people come from all directions, saying: Great King, four great mountains have come from all directions, and they will harm and injure the king's people. If the king encounters such a situation, what wisdom is there? The king replied: Blessed One, if there is such a situation, there is no place to escape, I will single-mindedly keep the precepts and only practice generosity. After answering in this way, I said "Good". Great King, when I said four great mountains, it refers to the birth, aging, sickness, and death of sentient beings. Since birth, aging, sickness, and death always harm and injure sentient beings, why doesn't the Great King practice morality and generosity? The king replied: Blessed One, if I keep the precepts and practice generosity, what fruit will I obtain? I replied: Great King, among gods and humans, you will experience much happiness and enjoyment. The king replied: Blessed One, if the Nyagrodha tree keeps the precepts and practices generosity, will it also experience the happiness and enjoyment of gods and humans? I replied: Great King, the Nyagrodha tree cannot keep the precepts and practice generosity. If it could, there would be no difference in experiencing happiness. Saying this is an invalid example. So, what is the previous example? In all the sutras, I gave the example that if someone is attached to beautiful flowers and goes to pick them, they are washed away by the water. Sentient beings are also like this, because they are attached to the five desires, they are washed away by the water of birth, aging, sickness, and death, so saying this is the previous example. What is the later example? In the Dhammapada Sutra, these verses were spoken: Do not despise small sins, thinking they are harmless. Even dripping drops of water gradually fill a large container.
