It is known. Although there are five consciousnesses, one feels nothing at all. All limbs and joints tremble and move, yet one is unable to act. When the whole body is cold and the warmth is near exhaustion, the signs of the maturation of previous virtuous and non-virtuous deeds will be seen. Son of good family, just as when the sun is near setting, all the shadows of mountains and bumps appear in the east, and there is no phenomenon of going to the west, so too, the result of the actions of sentient beings is similar. When this aggregate ceases, the continuum of another aggregate will arise, just as when a lamp appears, darkness is dispelled, and when a lamp ceases, darkness arises. Son of good family, for example, if a seal is made of beeswax and pressed onto leather, a pattern will appear from the contact of the seal and the leather. Thus, the seal of beeswax is not transferred to the leather, nor does the pattern arise from the leather, nor does it come from elsewhere, but the pattern arises due to the condition of the beeswax. When the present aggregate ceases, the intermediate state (bardo) does not immediately arise, nor does the present aggregate itself become the intermediate state, nor does the intermediate state arise on its own, nor does it come from elsewhere, but the intermediate state arises from the cause of the present aggregate. Just as when a seal is pressed onto leather, the pattern appears immediately after the seal is removed, there is no difference in name, but the time is different. Therefore, I have said that the intermediate state is not seen by the eye of flesh, but by the eye of miraculous power. The intermediate state has three kinds of food: the food of thought, the food of touch, and the food of consciousness. The intermediate state has two aspects: the result of virtuous actions and the result of non-virtuous actions. Among these, one who possesses the cause of virtuous actions will contemplate virtue. One who possesses the cause of non-virtuous actions will contemplate non-virtue. When the two parents meet and engage in sexual activity, they will go to the place of birth according to the cause of whatever actions they have done. Desire arises in the mother, and hatred arises in the father. When the father's semen is produced, he grasps at it as his own, and upon seeing it, his mind is pleased and filled with great joy. Thus, due to the three causes and conditions of afflictions, the intermediate state, immediately upon death, tends towards the five aggregates.

It does not arise, just as drawing on cloth, a picture can be formed immediately without the need for paint. At the time of birth, the faculties are either complete or incomplete. Among those with complete faculties, attachment arises from seeing forms. Because attachment arises, it is called craving. Generating attachment due to delusion is called ignorance. Due to the two causes and conditions of desire and ignorance, all objects are seen perversely: seeing permanence in impermanence, seeing self in non-self, seeing pleasure in displeasure, and seeing purity in impurity. Because of these four perverted views, one engages in virtue and non-virtue. Afflictions also transform into actions, and actions also transform into afflictions. This is called bondage. Therefore, the arising of the five aggregates is called bondage. If that person attends to the Buddha, the Buddha's attendant, or virtuous friends, they will hear the twelve divisions of scripture. Thus, by hearing the Dharma, they will contemplate virtuous conduct. By contemplating virtuous conduct, they will attain great wisdom. Great wisdom is called correct wisdom and vision. Having attained wisdom and vision, they will develop a great sense of regret for samsara. Having developed a sense of regret, they will not generate joy and delight. Not generating joy and delight, the mind of desire will be destroyed. When the mind of desire is destroyed, they will cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path. Having cultivated the Noble Eightfold Path, samsara will cease. With the cessation of samsara, it is called attaining liberation. Just as fire ceases when it does not encounter wood, the cessation of samsara is called Nirvana. Therefore, the cessation of the five aggregates is called Nirvana. Lion's Roar asked: Since there are no thorns in the sky, how can they be pulled out? Since there is no bondage in the aggregates, how are they bound? The Blessed One replied: Son of noble family, the five aggregates are bound by the iron chain of afflictions. There are no other afflictions apart from the five aggregates, and there are no other five aggregates apart from the afflictions. Son of noble family, just as a pillar supports a house, there is no pillar apart from the house, and there is no house apart from the pillar, sentient beings...
