My five aggregates are also the same as this. Because of the presence of afflictions, it is called bondage; because of the absence of afflictions, it is called liberation. Son of the lineage, the fist and the palm, and the knot and so on, these three arise and cease from aggregation and separation; there is no other dharma apart from that. The five aggregates of sentient beings are also the same as this; when accompanied by afflictions, it is called bondage. When there are no afflictions, it is called liberation. Son of the lineage, as it is said, how do name and form bind sentient beings? If name and form cease, there is no such thing as a sentient being. Beyond name and form, there is no other sentient being, and beyond sentient beings, there is no other thing called name and form; name and form bind sentient beings, and sentient beings also bind name and form. Lion's Roar asked: World Honored One, for example, the eye cannot see the eye, the finger cannot point to the finger, the sword cannot cut the sword, feeling cannot feel feeling, what is the reason for this? The World Honored One replied: Name and form bind name and form. What is the reason for this? What is called name and form is itself sentient beings. Sentient beings themselves are name and form. If name and form bind sentient beings, then it is name and form that bind name and form. The World Honored One taught: Son of the lineage, just as when two hands are joined together, there is no other dharma that can be used to join them, name and form are also like that. Therefore, name and form bind sentient beings. If name and form are abandoned, then there is liberation, I have said this, therefore I say that sentient beings are liberated. Lion's Roar asked: World Honored One, if it is called bondage because of the presence of name and form, then even the Arhats have not abandoned name and form, are they also in bondage? The World Honored One taught: Son of the lineage, there are two kinds of liberation: cutting off the seed and cutting off the fruit. What is called cutting off the seed is cutting off afflictions. The Arhats have cut off afflictions, and all afflictions have been destroyed and exhausted, therefore they cannot be bound by the afflictions of the seed. Because the fruit has not been cut off, the frui

This is called being bound by the earth. Arhats do not see the Buddha-nature, and because they do not see it, they do not attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Therefore, it can be called being bound by the fruit, but it cannot be called being bound by name and form. Son of good family, for example, a lamp will not cease to shine as long as the oil is not exhausted. If the oil is exhausted, it will surely die. Son of good family, oil is an example of afflictions. The lamp is an example of sentient beings. All sentient beings are completely covered by the oil of afflictions and cannot be liberated from suffering. If the oil is exhausted, they will be liberated from suffering. Lion's Roar Bodhisattva asked: World Honored One, the lamp and the oil have different characteristics, but sentient beings and afflictions are not like that. Sentient beings are afflictions, and afflictions are sentient beings. Sentient beings are the five aggregates, and the five aggregates are sentient beings. The five aggregates are afflictions, and afflictions are the five aggregates, so why is that? The World Honored One used the lamp as an analogy. The World Honored One said: Son of good family, there are eight kinds of analogies: forward analogy, reverse analogy, manifest analogy, non-manifest analogy, previous analogy, subsequent analogy, previous and subsequent analogy, and universal analogy. What is a forward analogy? Just as it is said in the sutras, when it rains heavily, all the puddles are filled. When the puddles are filled, the small streams are filled. When the small streams are filled, the large streams are filled. When the large streams are filled, the small springs are filled. When the small springs are filled, the large springs are filled. When the large springs are filled, the ponds are filled. When the ponds are filled, the large ponds are filled. When the large ponds are filled, the small rivers are filled. When the small rivers are filled, the large rivers are filled. When the large rivers are filled, the great ocean is filled. Similarly, the rain of the Tathagata's Dharma also makes the precepts of sentient beings complete. When the precepts are complete, the mind of no regret is complete. When the mind of no regret is complete, great joy is complete.
