The one who has entered the stream is also the same. Although one does not strive for Bodhi, by the power of Bodhi, one does not commit any unwholesome deeds. Son of good family, for example, if someone drinks nectar, the nectar will stop momentarily, but by its power, that person will live long and be without birth and death. Son of good family, for example, the king of Mount Sumeru has the excellent medicine called Langkali. If someone eats it, it will stop momentarily, but by the power of that medicine, one will not encounter the suffering of disease. Son of good family, for example, in the place where the wheel-turning king resides, even if the king is not there, no one can approach that place. Why is that? Because of the king's power and blessing. The one who has entered the stream is also like this, born in a bad place, although one does not strive for Bodhi, by the power of Bodhi, one does not commit unwholesome deeds. Son of good family, the aggregates of the one who has entered the stream cease here, and although one is born in other aggregates, one will not lose the aggregates of the one who has entered the stream. Son of good family, for example, people sow seeds with plows for the sake of the fruits of trees, and do many things such as watering. Before obtaining the fruits of the trees, the seeds will rot, but by the cause of the seeds, one will obtain the fruits of the trees. Just like that, the aggregates of the one who has entered the stream are also the same. Son of good family, for example, a very rich man has only one son, and that son also dies first. That son has a son who also lives in another place. After that person dies, the grandson hears about it and returns, collecting all the wealth. Those riches were not created by him, but when taking and collecting them, no one refuses to give them. Why is that? Because they are of the same lineage. The aggregates of the one who has entered the stream are also the same. Lion's Roar asked: In the verses spoken by the Blessed One, which bhikshu, practicing morality, samadhi, and wisdom, should be understood as irreversible, approaching Nirvana? Blessed One, how does one practice morality? How does one practice samadhi? How does one practice wisdom?

do. The Blessed One said: Son of good family, if someone takes vows and observes the precepts for the sake of benefiting oneself, and for the sake of desiring the enjoyment of gods and humans, but not for the sake of liberating all sentient beings and protecting the supreme Dharma; or merely for the sake of gain and fame; or fearing the terrors of the three lower realms; or desiring long life, good complexion, and strength; or desiring happiness and unimpeded fearlessness; or fearing the king's punishment; or fearing bad reputation; or observing the precepts for the sake of worldly affairs and possessions, this is not called practicing the precepts. Son of good family, how is it that one truly practices the precepts? Having taken vows, one observes them for the sake of liberating all sentient beings, or for the sake of protecting the sacred Dharma, for the sake of ferrying across those who have not crossed, liberating those who have not been liberated, being a refuge for those without refuge, or for the sake of completely liberating those who have not been liberated from suffering. When one observes in this way, one does not cling to the precepts, does not cling to the nature of the precepts, does not cling to grasping, does not cling to the ripening of the fruit, and does not contemplate fear and decline. Son of good family, whoever observes the precepts in this way is called practicing the precepts. Then, how is it that one practices samadhi? When practicing samadhi, it is for one's own liberation, and for the sake of gain and fame, but not for the sake of sentient beings, nor for the sake of protecting the Dharma. Observing the faults of attachment and the impurity of food, and observing the faculties of men and women, and the flow of impurities from the nine orifices, strife and contention, beating and striking, harming and killing each other, practicing samadhi for these things is not called perfectly practicing samadhi. Son of good family, then, how is it that one truly practices samadhi? If one perfectly practices samadhi for the sake of sentient beings, in order to enable all sentient beings to obtain equanimity, or in order to enable sentient beings to obtain the Dharma of non-retrogression, or in order to enable sentient beings to obtain the noble Dharma, or in order to enable sentient beings to obtain the Great Vehicle, or in order to protect and uphold the supreme Dharma, or in order to

In order to make sentient beings not regress from the mind of enlightenment, or in order to make sentient beings obtain the samadhi of courageous going, or in order to make sentient beings obtain the vajra-like samadhi, or in order to make sentient beings obtain dharani, or in order to make sentient beings obtain the four kinds of separate correct knowledge, or in order to meditate so that sentient beings may see the Buddha-nature. When practicing in that way, one does not look at samadhi, does not look at the characteristics of samadhi, does not look at meditation, and does not look at the maturation of the fruit. A son of good family, meditating in that way is called completely meditating on samadhi. Then, how is it to meditate on wisdom? If the meditator thinks like this: If I meditate on wisdom, I will be liberated and freed from the three lower realms. Who can dare to do things that benefit all sentient beings? Who can liberate beings from samsara? It is as difficult for a Buddha to appear in the world as it is for the udumbara flower to bloom. Now I will cut off all defilements, and in order to obtain the fruit of liberation, I will diligently meditate on wisdom, quickly cut off defilements, and quickly be liberated. Meditating in that way is not called meditating on wisdom. Then, how is it to meditate correctly? The wise person contemplates that sentient beings who are tormented by the suffering of birth, death, and old age are covered by ignorance and do not know how to meditate on the supreme and correct path. May I use this body to take upon myself the great suffering experienced by those sentient beings! May I become the debt for the poverty of sentient beings, for becoming the lowest of all, and for all the actions of desire, hatred, and ignorance caused by the mind of breaking vows. May all sentient beings not be born into the stream of desire, not be bound by name and form, and not become objects of exploitation. May all sentient beings quickly be liberated from samsara, and may I not be weary of dwelling alone. May all sentient
