Is it common? Or does each one possess it individually? If it is common, then when one person attains unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, all sentient beings should also attain it together. World Honored One, just as twenty people have one enemy, if one person eliminates that enemy, the remaining nineteen should also be without that enemy together. The Buddha-nature is also like that; if one person attains it, all others should also attain it. If it is said that each possesses it individually, then it becomes impermanent. Why is that? Because it can be counted and numbered. The World Honored One said that the Buddha-nature of sentient beings is neither one nor two. If it is said that each possesses it individually, then it cannot be said that the Tathagatas are equal, nor can it be said that the Buddha-nature is like space. The World Honored One taught: Son of good family, the Buddha-nature of sentient beings is neither one nor two, and the Buddhas are equal and like space, existing together in all sentient beings. If someone cultivates the Noble Eightfold Path, they will clearly see it. Son of good family, there is a grass called "Endurance Grass" on the snowy mountains. If it is eaten by livestock, it turns into the essence of ghee. The Buddha-nature of sentient beings is also like that. Simhanada Bodhisattva asked: As The World Honored One said, is the so-called "Endurance Grass" eaten by one animal? Or by many animals? If it is eaten by one animal, then being eaten is equivalent to being cut off. If it is eaten by many animals, then it cannot be said that the Buddha-nature of sentient beings is also like that. As the World Honored One said, if one cultivates the Noble Eightfold Path, one will see the Buddha-nature, which is unreasonable. Why is that? If the path is also eaten by one animal, it is cut off like the Endurance Grass. If it is cut off, then after one person cultivates it, others will have no share. If there are many paths, then how can it be said to be complete cultivation and omniscient wisdom? The World Honored One taught: Son of good family, for example, the path is level and peaceful, the mind

Everything goes unhindered. In the middle of the road, there is the shade of trees, which is very cool. Travelers rest there and relieve their fatigue, and the shade of the trees is eternal, unchanging and indestructible, and no one can take it away. The "road" here is a metaphor for the noble path. "Shade" is a metaphor for Buddha-nature. Noble son, just as a large city has only one gate, and many people go in and out, and no one can stop them, neither destroy nor take it away. Noble son, just as a large bridge has many people passing through it, and no one can stop them, or make them stay, or destroy and take it away. Noble son, just as a skilled doctor can cure all diseases, no one can stop him, saying, "Don't treat this disease, give up that disease," so too are the noble path and Buddha-nature. Simhanada Bodhisattva asked: World Honored One, these metaphors you have given are not actually like that. Why? If one has not traveled on the road before, one will feel tired later. Why do you say it is unhindered? Similarly, one will feel tired in other aspects as well. If the noble path and Buddha-nature are really like that, then if one practices one, the other will feel tired. The World Honored One replied: Noble son, what you say is not reasonable. The metaphor of the road that I have given is only a partial metaphor, not a complete metaphor. Noble son, the worldly road has obstacles and hindrances, which is different from the noble path, so it cannot be compared. The path without defilements is not like that, it does not hinder sentient beings, it is equal and non-dual, and there is no place for fatigue. This is different from the worldly road. This correct path is the cause of illuminating the Buddha-nature of all sentient beings, but it is not the cause of arising. Just as the light of a lamp illuminates objects. Noble son, all sentient beings are the same, because of ignorance there is action, because of one person's ignorance
