If there is Buddha-nature, why is there regression and non-regression? Ponder this question carefully, listen frequently, and I will explain and elaborate in detail. Son of the lineage, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas will regress due to thirteen dharmas. What are these thirteen dharmas? They are: a mind of disbelief, a mind of non-diligence, a mind of doubt, attachment to body and possessions and being stingy, generating great fear towards great Nirvana, thinking about how to keep sentient beings away from Nirvana, having no patience, an untamed mind, a mind tormented by sorrow, untruthfulness, recklessness, despising one's own body, thinking that one cannot destroy afflictions, and being unwilling to enter the Dharma of Bodhi. Son of the lineage, these thirteen dharmas will cause Bodhisattvas to regress from Bodhi. There are also six dharmas that destroy the mind of Bodhi. What are the six? They are: being stingy with the Dharma, generating an unwholesome mind towards sentient beings, relying on evil friends, not being diligent, praising oneself and being arrogant, and doing worldly activities. These six dharmas destroy the mind of Bodhi. Son of the lineage, some people hear that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, is the teacher of gods and humans, the most important among all sentient beings, incomparable, superior to Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, with clear Dharma eyes that can see all dharmas without obstruction, and can save all sentient beings from the ocean of afflictions, and then generate great aspirations and vows, thinking: If there is such a person in the world, I can also attain it. With these causes and conditions, they generate the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Or they generate the mind of Bodhi through the teachings of others. Or they hear that Bodhisattvas must endure countless kalpas of asceticism before finally attaining unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, hearing

Thinking, if I cannot practice such austerities, how can I attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? Therefore, I will turn back. Chapter Thirty-Eight. Son of good family, there are also these five dharmas that will cause the mind of enlightenment to turn back. What are the five? They are: delighting in ordaining into the teachings of non-Buddhists; not cultivating the mind of great loving-kindness; delighting in finding fault with those who speak the Dharma; constantly delighting in samsara; and not being inclined to uphold, read, recite, write, explain, and expound the twelve divisions of the scriptures. These are the five dharmas that cause the mind of enlightenment to turn back. Furthermore, these two dharmas cause the mind of enlightenment to turn back. What are the two? They are: being attached to and clinging to the five desires; and not respecting the Three Jewels, not making offerings, serving, and honoring them. Like this, many causes and conditions will cause the mind of enlightenment to turn back. Furthermore, how is it called a non-turning-back mind? Some hear that the Thus-Gone One liberates beings from birth, aging, sickness, and death, and without relying on others, by diligently striving, one can attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and think, if there is indeed a path to attain enlightenment, I too must strive diligently and surely attain it. Having thought thus, with that cause and that condition, they generate the mind of enlightenment, and whether they have accumulated much merit or little, they dedicate it all to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and make this vow: May I always attend to and serve the Buddha and the Buddha's attendants, may I always hear the profound Dharma, and may I possess the five faculties, and even if I am greatly afflicted by suffering, may I not lose this mind. Thus they make aspirations. Furthermore, may the Buddha and the Buddha's attendants always hold me in their thoughts, may I possess the five roots of virtue, and even if beings cut off my body, limbs, head, eyes, and all my parts, may I generate great loving-kindness towards them.

Generating Bodhicitta, I am extremely delighted, for this man has caused the seeds of my enlightenment to arise and grow. If they did not exist, by what cause would I manifest and attain the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment? Thinking thus, one makes great aspirations. And one says this: May I not become a eunuch, nor a hermaphrodite, nor a woman's body. May I not be dominated by others. May I not encounter an evil lord. May I not be ruled by an evil king. May I not be born in an evil land. Even if I obtain a good body, may I not become arrogant because of noble birth, possessing much wealth and jewels, and after possessing them. May I always hear the twelve divisions of scripture, and may I uphold them, read them, recite them, write them, explain them, and teach them. If I explain and teach to sentient beings, may others believe and accept, and may they be exceedingly pleased and without doubt, and may they never generate ill will towards me. May I know much from hearing little. May I not hear much and not understand the meaning. May I teach with my mind, and may I not become a mind that does not teach. May the actions of my body, speech, and mind not be mixed with sinful and unwholesome deeds. May I give happiness to all sentient beings. May the discipline of the body and the wisdom of the mind be like a mountain, unshakeable. In order to fully uphold the unsurpassed sacred Dharma, may I not be stingy with body, life, and possessions. May I not perform virtuous deeds with unexamined objects. May I live by righteous livelihood and be without a deceitful mind. May I always remember kindness, and may I repay even small kindness with great rewards. May I be skilled in worldly arts and objects. May I be skilled in the languages of all sentient beings. If I read, recite, or write the twelve divisions of scripture, may I not be lazy or negligent. If some sentient beings do not like to hear, may I make everyone like to hear. May speech be gentle and pleasing, and may I not utter unwholesome words. May I be a mediator for those who are not in harmony. May I relieve those who are sorrowful and fearful from sorrow.
