Why, in the category of milk, after clarification, do discipline, concentration, and wisdom arise and increase? Simhanada Bodhisattva asked: World Honored One, if there is no cause for clarification, why are the names milk and yogurt established? The World Honored One said: Son of good family, in the world, there are three kinds of answers to refute others. The answer of transformation is: As previously stated, how is it discipline? From no regret to obtaining complete nirvana. And the answer of not saying anything is: As a wandering ascetic came and asked me: Is the "I" that I speak of permanent? At that time, I did not answer anything. And the answer of doubt is: As from this sutra, if the cause of clarification becomes two, why is milk not two? These are the three answers. Son of good family, I will now give the answer of transformation, as worldly people say: If there is milk, there must be yogurt, therefore milk and yogurt are established. The Buddha-nature is also the same, if sentient beings exist, the Buddha-nature also exists, because it will appear later. Simhanada Bodhisattva asked: World Honored One, the meaning spoken by the World Honored One is not so. Why is that? The past has ceased, the future has not arrived, how can it be said to exist? If it is said that the future exists, this meaning is also not established. Just as worldly people see that there is no son, they say there is no son. Sentient beings do not have Buddha-nature, why do you say that all sentient beings have Buddha-nature? The World Honored One said: Son of good family, the past should be said to exist. For example, after the sour fermenting sprout grows, the fruit stops. The sprout is also the same from sweetness to the growth of the fruit, and it will become sour after ripening. Son of good family, the sour taste does not exist in the process of the seed, the sprout, and the fruit growing. The sour taste arises from the shape, color, and form of the medicine. Thus, the sour taste is not from the beginning.

Now it has come to exist. Although it did not exist from the beginning, it will now exist, but it is not the initial cause. Likewise, although the initial seed has passed, it is called existence. Therefore, the past should also be called existence. How then is the future called existence? For example, when someone cultivates sesame, another person asks, 'What do you cultivate this for?' He replies, 'To have butter.' Although there is actually no butter, when the sesame ripens, the grains are collected, roasted, pounded, and pressed, it will initially become butter. Therefore, it should be recognized that the person is not lying. Therefore, the future should also be called existence. Furthermore, how is the past called existence? Son of lineage, for example, if a person secretly slanders the king, and many years pass, and the king hears of it, and having heard it, asks him, 'Why did you slander me?' He replies, 'Great king, I did not slander.' Why is that? Because the slander has also ceased.' The king says, 'Both I and the slander remain, why do you say it has ceased?' Because of that reason, that cause, the body and life have vanished. Son of lineage, although those two do not truly exist, the fruit has not vanished. Therefore, the past should be called existence. Furthermore, how is the future called existence? For example, if a person goes to a potter and asks, 'Is there pottery?' And the potter replies, 'There is pottery.' Although the potter does not actually have pottery now, because there is clay, he says there is pottery, but it should be recognized that the person is not lying. Therefore, just as there is yogurt in milk, and sentient beings have the Buddha-nature, it is the same. If you wish to see the Buddha-nature, you must examine time, measure, shape, and form very carefully. Therefore, when I said that all sentient beings have the Buddha-nature, it is not untrue.' Simhanada Bodhisattva reported, 'If all sentient beings did not have the Buddha-nature, how could they attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment? Because of the true cause, sentient beings can attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment.'

If one can attain Bodhi, the true cause is like this: it is Buddha-nature! World Honored One, if there is no banyan tree in the fruit of the banyan, why is it called the fruit of the banyan, and not the fruit of the acacia? World Honored One, for example, the Gotama lineage cannot be called the Atreya lineage, and similarly, the Atreya lineage cannot be called the Gotama lineage. Similarly, the fruit of the banyan cannot be called the fruit of the acacia, and the fruit of the acacia cannot be called the fruit of the banyan. Just as the World Honored One is not someone other than the Gotama lineage, the Buddha-nature of sentient beings is the same. Therefore, know that all sentient beings possess Buddha-nature! The World Honored One said: Son of lineage, saying that there is a banyan tree in the fruit is not right. If it really exists, why can't it be seen? Son of lineage, for example, worldly substances are invisible because of causes and conditions. What are the causes and conditions? Like this: invisible because of distance, like the tracks of birds in the sky; invisible because of proximity, like eyelashes in the eyes; invisible because of destruction, like rotten roots; invisible because of confused consciousness, like an unfocused mind; invisible because of subtlety, like fine dust; invisible because of obscuration, like clouds obscuring stars; invisible because of multitude, like sesame seeds in a pile of rice; invisible because of mixture, like putting beans in a pile of beans. If the banyan tree is not like these eight causes and conditions, if it really exists, why can't it be seen? If it is said that it is invisible because of subtlety and obscuration, that is also not right. Why? Because the characteristic of a tree is that it is large. If its nature is subtle, how can it grow? If it is invisible because of obscuration, then it should always be invisible. Previously there was no coarse nature, but now it is seen as coarse, so coarseness has no nature from the beginning. Previously there was no visible nature, but now
