If we speak of six things, there is no example of nirvana, and it should not be taken; rather, things without interval should be taken as examples. Son of good family, the nature of nirvana is non-existent, like the absence of self and what belongs to self. Son of good family, worldly dharmas are not interchangeable with nirvana, therefore, six things cannot be used as examples. Son of good family, all dharmas are without self, but this nirvana is truly with self. Therefore, nirvana has no cause, but its nature is the result. That which is a cause but not a result is called Buddha-nature, because it is not born from a cause. That which is a cause but not a result is called non-result because it is not the result of a bhikshu. The term 'cause' is used to clarify the cause. Son of good family, there are two kinds of causes: the cause of arising and the cause of manifestation. Among them, that which causes dharma to arise is the cause of arising. Just as a lamp illuminates objects, it is called the cause of manifestation. Defilements are the cause of arising. The parents of sentient beings are the cause of manifestation. Seeds and the like are the cause of arising. Earth, water, fertilizer, and the like are the cause of manifestation. Again, the cause of arising is that one obtains unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment through the six perfections. Again, the cause of manifestation is that one obtains unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment through Buddha-nature. Furthermore, the cause of manifestation is the six perfections and Buddha-nature. Furthermore, the cause of arising is the unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment of the samadhi of heroic progress. Again, the cause of manifestation is the unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment of the Noble Eightfold Path. Again, the cause of arising is the six perfections of the mind of faith. The Bodhisattva Lion's Roar asked: World Honored One, what is the meaning of seeing the Tathagata and seeing the Buddha-nature, as spoken by the World Honored One? World Honored One, the body of the Tathagata has no marks or shapes,

It is not long. It is not short. It is not white. It is not black. It has no direction. It does not abide in the three realms, and is not the nature of conditioned phenomena. It is not known by eye consciousness. If the Buddha-nature is also like that, how can it be seen? The Blessed One said: Son of good family, the body of the Buddha has two aspects: permanence and impermanence. Among them, impermanence is the expedient display for the sake of saving all sentient beings, which is called seeing with the eyes. Permanence is the body of liberation of the Thus-Gone One, which is also called seeing with the eyes, and also called seeing with hearing. Buddha-nature also has two aspects: visible and invisible. Among them, the visible are the tenth-ground Bodhisattvas and the Buddha, the Blessed One. The invisible are all sentient beings. Seeing with the eyes is when the eyes of the tenth-ground Bodhisattvas and the Buddha, the Blessed One, see that sentient beings have Buddha-nature. Seeing with hearing is when all sentient beings and the ninth-ground Bodhisattvas hear that there is Buddha-nature and the body of the Thus-Gone One. This is also divided into two types: form and non-form. Among them, form is the liberation of the Thus-Gone One. Non-form is when the Thus-Gone One completely cuts off all form and nature. Buddha-nature also has two aspects: form and non-form. Among them, form is unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Non-form arises from the lowest common people to the tenth-ground Bodhisattvas, because the tenth-ground Bodhisattvas cannot see it clearly, it is called non-form. Son of good family, Buddha-nature also has two aspects: form and non-form. Among them, form is the Buddha and the Bodhisattva. Non-form is all sentient beings. Seeing with the eyes is form. Seeing with hearing is non-form. That which is neither internal nor external is Buddha-nature. Although it is neither internal nor external, because it is not destruction and emptiness, it is said that all sentient beings have Buddha-nature.

Oṃ! The Bodhisattva Lion's Roar asked: World Honored One, as the World Honored One has said, just as there is cheese in milk, all sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature, which is like a vajra of great power. The Buddha-nature is like the completely pure essence of butter. Why did the World Honored One say that the Buddha-nature is neither external nor internal? The World Honored One replied: Son of good family, I did not say that there is cheese in milk, but rather because cheese arises from milk, therefore I said there is cheese. Asked: World Honored One, do all phenomena of arising each have their own time? Replied: Son of good family, at the time of milk there is no cheese, nor butter, ghee, or essence. All sentient beings also cling to milk, so I said there is no cheese in milk. If it exists, why are two names not given, just as those skilled in these two arts are called goldsmiths and blacksmiths? Therefore, at the time of cheese there is no milk, butter, ghee, or essence. Sentient beings also perceive that cheese is not milk, so they do not cling to butter, ghee, or butter essence. Likewise, one should understand the expansion of butter essence. Son of good family, there are two kinds of causes: the true cause and the causal condition. Among them, the true cause is like cheese arising from milk. The causal condition is that cheese arises from milk due to conditions such as warmth and odor, so it is said that milk has the nature of cheese. The Bodhisattva Lion's Roar asked: World Honored One, if milk does not have the nature of cheese, like a horn, why does cheese not arise from a horn? Replied: Son of good family, cheese can also arise from a horn. Why is that? Because I have said that there are two kinds of causal conditions: odor and warmth. The nature of the horn is transformed into cheese because of odor. Lion's Roar asked: World Honored One, if cheese can arise from a horn, why do those who seek cheese desire milk but not a horn? The World Honored One replied: Son of good family, therefore I have spoken of the true cause and the causal condition.
