Therefore, if even the shadow of the Buddha Bhagavan has such power, then it should be understood how important it is to uphold the complete precepts. Son of good family, if one does not have complete precepts, one cannot even attain the state of a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha, let alone the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment. Furthermore, there are two types: for the sake of gain and for the sake of the sacred Dharma. Among them, holding precepts for the sake of gain, it should be understood that such precepts cannot see the Buddha-nature and the Tathagata. Although one may hear the names of the Buddha-nature and the Tathagata, it cannot be said that one sees through hearing. If one holds precepts for the sake of the sacred Dharma, it should be understood that such precepts can see the Buddha-nature and the Tathagata, which can be called seeing with the eyes and also seeing through hearing. Furthermore, there are two types: deeply rooted and difficult to shake, and not deeply rooted and easily moved. Meditating with emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness is called deeply rooted and difficult to shake. If one does not diligently practice these three samadhis, even if one meditates and practices, one will fall into the twenty-five existences, which is called easily moved. Thirty-seventh fascicle. Furthermore, there are two types: for oneself and for sentient beings. Among them, acting for sentient beings, one can see the Buddha-nature and the Tathagata. There are also two types of vows of precepts: vows by nature and vows by conditions of others. Among them, having taken the precepts, one does not degenerate until countless lifetimes, such as encountering disturbances in the country, or encountering unwholesome friends, or encountering evil times and hearing evil and perverse teachings, or dwelling with those with wrong views, even if there is no ceremony for taking the precepts at that time, one still guards and does not degenerate as one initially took them, this is called vows by nature. If one meets with a Khenpo and the Sangha, and obtains the precepts through supplication and the four karmas, then obtaining the precepts also depends on the teachings and instructions of the Khenpo, Acharya, fellow students, and virtuous friends.

Knowing what to do and what not to do, listening to the Dharma and expounding the Dharma, and knowing how to possess all conduct, this is called the precept vow born of other conditions. Son of good family, the vow born of nature is to see the Buddha's nature with the eyes, and to see the Tathagata, which can also be called seeing through hearing. There are also two kinds of precepts: the precepts of the Hearers and the precepts of the Bodhisattvas. Among them, from the initial generation of Bodhicitta to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, it is called the precepts of the Bodhisattva. From contemplating the bones to obtaining the fruit of the Arhat, it is called the precepts of the Hearers. Among them, guarding the precepts of the Hearers should be understood as not seeing the Buddha's nature and the Tathagata. Guarding the precepts of the Bodhisattva should be understood as attaining unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, and seeing the Buddha's nature, the Tathagata, and Nirvana. The Bodhisattva Lion's Roar asked: World Honored One, by what cause and what condition does the precept increase and is guarded? The World Honored One replied: Son of good family, in order not to regret. Why not regret? In order to experience happiness. Why experience happiness? In order to completely abandon. Why completely abandon? In order to be extremely happy. Why be extremely happy? In order to practice meditation yoga. Why practice meditation yoga? In order to truly know and see. Why truly know and see? In order to see the faults of samsara. Why see the faults of samsara? In order for the mind not to be attached. Why is the mind not attached? In order to obtain liberation. Why liberation? In order to obtain the unsurpassed great Nirvana. Why obtain great Nirvana? In order to obtain permanence, bliss, self, and purity. Why permanence, bliss, self, and purity? In order to obtain non-birth and non-cessation.
