If it is said that there is no birth and no cessation, it is because of seeing the Buddha-nature. Therefore, Bodhisattvas naturally guard the precepts, attaining the ultimate purity. Sons of good families, monks who uphold the precepts do not intentionally seek or desire a mind free from regret, but naturally attain a mind free from regret. Why is this? Because the nature of Dharma is such. As for bliss, complete abandonment, supreme bliss, correct knowledge and vision, seeing the faults of samsara, a mind without attachment, complete liberation, nirvana, permanence, happiness, self, complete purity, no birth and no cessation, and seeing the Buddha-nature, although one does not intentionally seek them, they will be naturally attained. Why is this? Because the nature of Dharma is such. The Bodhisattva Simhanada asked: "World Honored One, if from the cause of upholding the precepts one obtains the fruit of no regret, and from the cause of liberation one obtains the fruit of nirvana, then if the precepts have no cause, nirvana also has no fruit. That which has no cause is called permanence. If nirvana has no cause, then it should not be impermanent. If that is the case, then nirvana would be something that comes into existence from having no beginning. If something comes into existence from having no beginning, then it would become impermanent, like fire and a lamp. If nirvana is like that, then why is it called self, happiness, and complete purity?" The World Honored One replied: "Sons of good families, excellent, excellent! Because you have planted roots of virtue before countless Buddhas in the past, you dare to ask the Tathagata about these profound meanings. Sons of good families, because you have not lost your past memories, you are able to ask in this way. I remember that in the past, countless eons ago, in the country of Shakya (present-day Nepal), a Tathagata named Well-Obtained appeared in the world. At that time, that Tathagata taught this Great Nirvana Sutra for three hundred million years, and both you and I were gathered in that assembly. I personally...

At that time, that venerable one asked the Blessed One, but at that time, the Blessed One, for the sake of sentient beings, was absorbed in samadhi, so he did not explain that meaning. Good, great man, it is good to remember such former things, to keep them very well in mind, and to listen constantly, and I will fully explain them to you. Morality also has a cause. What is it? Listening to the holy Dharma. Listening to the holy Dharma also has a cause. What is it? Approaching a virtuous friend. Approaching a virtuous friend also has a cause. That is the mind of faith. The mind of faith also has a cause. There are two kinds of causes, namely, listening to the Dharma and contemplating the meaning. Son of good family, the mind of faith arises from the cause of listening to the Dharma. Listening to the Dharma also arises from the cause of the mind of faith. The two kinds of Dharma can become both cause and cause of cause. They can become both fruit and fruit of fruit. Son of good family, just as a naked ascetic places a vase on three wooden stakes, one's cause is also one, and one's fruit is also one, and they cannot be separated. Son of good family, just as ignorance is the condition for action, and action is the condition for ignorance. Ignorance and action can become both cause and cause of cause. They can become both fruit and fruit of fruit. Likewise, from birth to old age and death is the condition, and old age and death is the condition for birth. Birth and old age and death can become both cause and cause of cause. They can become both fruit and fruit of fruit. Good

And it is because it is the fruit of ascetics and Brahmins. It is called fruit because it cuts off the cycle of existence. It is called fruit because it destroys afflictions. Nirvana is called fruit because it is completely reproached by all afflictions. Afflictions are said to be with faults. Son of good family, Nirvana has no cause, its very nature is the fruit. Why is that? Because there is no birth and cessation, no agent, it is not conditioned, it is not unconditioned, it is constant and unchanging, without a place, without beginning and end. Son of good family, if Nirvana had a cause, it would not be called Nirvana. 'Completely' means cause. 'Nirvana' means non-existence, because there is no cause, it is called complete Nirvana. The Bodhisattva Simhanada asked: As the Blessed One said, 'Nirvana has no cause,' is that not the meaning? Saying 'no' implies these six meanings. What are they? Because it is completely absent, it is said to be absent, just as all phenomena are without self and what belongs to self. Because there is no intermediate, it is said to be absent, just as worldly people say there is no water in the ocean, or no sun and moon. Because it is little, it is said to be absent, just as worldly people say food has no salty taste, so there is no salt, or juice has little sweetness, so there is no sweetness. Because it has not been experienced, it is said to be absent, just as those of bad lineage have not experienced the Dharma of Brahmins, so there is no Dharma of Brahmins. Because one holds to evil and unwholesome Dharma, it is said to be absent, just as worldly people who hold to sinful and unwholesome Dharma are not called ascetics and Brahmins, so there are no ascetics and Brahmins. Because there is no counterpart, it is said to be absent, because there is no white, so it is black, or because there is no appearance, so there is no appearance. Blessed One, Nirvana is also the same, there is an intermediate, but there is no cause, so is it called Nirvana? The Blessed One said: Son of good family, in what way do you
